Nav strangeness....need help. (LONG)

I posted a while back about Nav not tracking right but all the diags that the dealer did checked out. I like to understand how the entire setup works so here is what I know and what I need from someone with a 02 CLS w/ Nav:

My problem:
Car icon on NAV screen keep veering off the road to the right then pops back on in about 3 seconds....this happens repeatedly and probelm gets worse longer you drive w/o stopping.

What I discovered:
The system seems to get updates about twice a second from the wheel and yaw sensors and about once every three seconds from the sat. (This would explain how the w/y sensors misguide it off the road and gets a correction from the sat to pop it back on) I went into the Nav diag menu (Menu & Map/Guide & Cancel simul.) and under Yaw rate I see two values. Top one is roughly 2.5v and bottom one at rest is about the same. When you turn left the values get lower (1.5v) and higher when turning right (3.5v). In my car however the lower number starts creeping up constantly as I drive...even in a straight line. Off by as much as .1 in about 30 minutes of driving. ...this is when problem is at it worse. So at this point top value is 2.5 and bottom is 2.6...BUT if I bring the car to a complete stop top value changes to match whatever the bottom value is. This seems like a calibration mechanism. After I stop...the problem is not so bad immediately but the longer I drive the worse it gets.

What I need:
If someone with a 02 CLS w/ Nav who drives for 30 minutes or longer can go into the diag menu and yaw rate section while driving and see what the two values are off by after 30 minues I would much appreciat it. Remember you cannot stop for the entire 30 minutes.

Thanks much for reading this far.

Youi may need a new NAV unit... or Pro Calibration at least...

Just to let you know... On long trips like 6-7 hrs trip to montreal and back...Sometmes the NAV would go bananna... It would keep going off road.... I suspect the the NAV unit or sensor get hot and start to confuse the NAV CPU...
I use to shut the NAV and once the car is stoped and cooled down the NAV wuold function perfectly again...

Go figure!

Yep, the internal gyroscope is bad if it keeps wanting to turn in one direction all the time. Happened to a couple of guys over at a-tl.com and they had the whole trunk unit replaced under warranty.

If you ever have any questions about navi functioning, go to a c u r a w o r l d.com and search for daverman. He is the resident guru on navi since he works on GPS systems for a living. He is extremely knowledgeable on the Acura navi systems.

Sounds like I may have a gyro problem as well.
About 2 months ago I started experiencing a problem that is exactly as runis described.

My nav has a tendency to take freeway off-ramps without me (to the right of course) and then it has to recalculate and all. It's not a problem unless I am close to a place where I need to take a ramp or make a turn.

Taking a almost parallel ramp to the HW is bit tricky by itself... The NAV keeps tracking the HW path while I am on the ramp... 100 m later the divergence is corrected after the new GPS update come in.... no problem.... However, the real problem is if I am driving on the HW and the NAV keeps taking my CLS position of the HW.... it happened at least 2 times... as I described above.

Just bring it in to your dealership for a new one replaced under warranty ! It's that simple. I complained when I first bought mine and the little clock didn't show up on the screen. FIX: Replace the navi brain in the trunk ! Results: Fixed under warranty, hassle free......

Good logic. My brain unfortunately has to understand everything it sees....so I have to know how/why it broke. Even if they replace the whole Navi brain in the trunk, it could break again. Dropped it off at the dealership this morning and talk to the shop mgr. and drove around with him for about 30 minutes. He had an interesting theory; I have a 12" sub with about 400 watts going to it in the trunk. He thought the spl change plus the vibrations might have knocked the internal gyro off whack. May have to get a smaller sub but well worth it for the Nav. Good news is that I got a 03 Durange SLT 4x4 for a rental. I get to be a big dog for a few days.

Another fine example of the kind of B.S. Acura service dept can come up with. If you have ever noticed, there is a shock-absorber type system in the Navi, just like a cd changer, which absorbs all of the vibration not to disturb the navi. They will come up with any kind of story not to fix something........and it works a lot of the time.

You maybe right but I don't think this guys was trying to find a reason not to fix it...I think he was actually genuine. Vibrations you can somewhat dampen, but with a bigass sub 14 inches away, you can't get rid of all of the vibration. Also I think a bigger factor might be the sound pressure level (SPL)...the volume of air in the trunk is getting compressed and decompressed, that in itself puts can put stress on objects. Anyways....they ordered me a brand new nav unit, no hassels. Infact they said they could not even reproduce it, they just took my word for it and replaced it. BTW, this is David McDavid Acura in Dallas.

BTW the Durango gas mileage does SUCK ASS. Must be like 10mpg.
