Mystery Factory Oil

I know its been confirmed (I believe Jens talked with an Acura engineer) that you should keep the factory break-in oil in for the first 3500 miles. My question is should you keep it in no matter how long it takes to get to 3500 miles? Since my truck is my daily driver it may not be until the end of summer until I reach 3500 miles on my CL-S. Also the car was sitting in the dealers lot for a few months before I bought it conceivably bringing the total time to nearly 1 year when its time to change the oil. I have never gone that long on any car I've ever owned. I wonder if you can buy this mystery factory oil from the dealer. Also, why doesn't the owners manual state that you should not change the oil before 3500 miles?

Suggestion:

Post a new topic: Jens: Break-in oil, again???

Give him your miles, driving style (short, long, etc). Then give him the current time that you have owned it.

1. Perhaps you can just change the filter???
2. Maybe, the benefits of the break-in oil are negated by the very long time between oil changes and/or oil and filter change (I don't know).

Oils do tend to collect all kind of nasty stuff and the additives will try to keep harmful stuff away for a while (how long is the question).

ASK JENS, with some "hard" data

(just a suggestion...)

I heard break-in oil should be kept for 7500 Miles. I kept mine until 6500 miles.

I'm not saying your right or wrong...

Just a thought. If one driver drove at 2000 rpm (typical freeway speeds) for 90% of 5000 miles and another driver was "hot rodding" with the revs sitting at 4000+ rpm for 50% of the time, wouldn't this make a difference in terms of engine seating?

So, when they figure a "break-in" "minimum" interval, they must consider some typical driving cycle.

The point I was trying to make is this:

The manual has recommended changes by:

1. driving style
2. time
3. number of miles

The manual says to change the oil at 1 year, regardless. Acura care says to always "go by the manual first" when it comes to maintenance issues.

So, lets say I have 3000 miles in one year. Do I skip the oil change (and go with the break-in oil story) *or* change the oil and get rid of all of the contaminants in the oil and filter?

If someone is putting 1000 miles/month on the car, this isn't an issue.

Wow that car will still be like new 10 years from now. This is a question I have not been asked so let me go get some facts together before I answer this one.As a comparison my Miata is in storage 5 to 6 months a year,I change the oil in that car twice yearly wether it needs it or not.Jens

I was advised by Mike Spencer, Manager Acura Public Relations, that ideally you should leave the breakin oil in until 7500 miles. Silver CLS on LI.
