It also squeals like a pig when you try it in reverse. So your dad may have hearing problems too Andy, heh.
its like a chalkboard & fingernails kinda thing.
At least you dont have friends like Phil (Iridium130)
who floored his car while taking it for a spin and didnt know about the parking brake set by the foot!

I can’t imagine how a little dead weight on the Tranny is any more abusive then flooring the gas when the light turns green.

It's not. We just have a lot of automatic transmission engineers on here
Speaking of transmission design. What folks are referring too is the small device (pin) which holds your car in park. They are not designed to be very strong. However I have never really heard of one breaking. Even when the repo guys tow your car away in park, I still haven't heard of one breaking.
And the reason your car might roll back when in park is because the pin/rod has to find the notch to seat in.
Here you can see the notches, and the pin (rod) device.

This is too funny.
My girlfriend's father drove 150 miles in a rental Tuarus with the e-brake on. He was wondering why the car smelled funny when he got home.

I only use the e-brake when I lift the car. Besides that, by the name alone, one would tend to think that it's to be used in case of an emergency.
