My old man is getting........ OLD!!!! not a joke.

So my Pops takes the car out for the first time to run errands.

He comes back and complains that my car is kinda sluggish and notes that its retarded that my car doesn't even come with an E-brake handle.

I stood there frozen, and ran to my car to confirm it...

YES, HE DROVE OVER 20 MILES WITH MY EMERGENCY BRAKE ON!

well why do you use the ebrake on an auto? I just don't get that. Either way, it's not a huge deal, you'll just have some extra wear on the pads.

You SUPPOSED to use the e-brake with ANY transmission. Case closed. E-brake is there for a reason, USE IT!

To take stress off the tranny, my dad always told me to put it in neutral, put the e-brake on, take your foot off the brake, then put it in park.

just one little tidbit, you know when you get out of the car and don't set the ebrake and the car still jerks? That is causing un-needed stress on the transmission because it has to hold the cars weight.

Think what you want though, we are just trying to give you some advice. Now your car won't be fucked up by not using the ebrake, but relieving stress is relieving stress.

Funny, I used to have a 'whatever' attitude toward using the parking brake on my CL. My first gen (automatic) has a problem where I can turn off the car and remove the key from the ignition while still in gear. Once at a restaurant I forgot to put it in park and came out to find my car across the lot. A week later or so Acura issued a recall for this problem. So yes, you might wanna get in the habit anyways simply because shit happens. Had I used my parking brake (and I do now, a little late) it wouldn't have happened.

Was visiting with my dad and roads were slick... I shovelled his drove and told him to back the car into his carport so in the morning, if the drive is snowed in, he can just gun it and fly out...

Comes home in the evening and tells me he backed in but backed in too far and hit the wall (to the house)..

Geez..............

As opposed to accelerating the weight of the car which adds significantly more stress than the weight vehicle. Even sitting on a slope which would given a vertical G force of 0.1 Gs (about a 10% grade), which is steep, this is less than what the cars sees on normal acceleration.

Now, I am not stating that the e-brake shouldn't be used as it should when require (not required in a flat parking spot or garage). The e-brake should always be used when there is a noticeable grade. But IMO, it is not due to wear; it is due to the potential of slipping and the vehicle moving on its own. The load placed on the car when 1st and reverse are locked is minimal.

thanks...that was a very adult thing to say. Either way I don't but the "it relieves stress" arguement.

I've never heard of tranny problems from not using the e brake. If there are problems like exxxciteCL mentioned, it's due to a defect.

Just passing on information our transmission builder has always told us. I seem to trust the guy. He says it's not a must do, but is a good safety measure.

I think that is the optimal part... You don't want your car wandering off on you because it slipped out of gear. :o

I have never used the E-Brake on an auto car unless it was parked on a steep incline.
And I never had a Tranny issue either.
I can’t imagine how a little dead weight on the Tranny is any more abusive then flooring the gas when the light turns green.

If you think its bad on your tranny or not doesn't matter. Point is you could be on a very slight incline and not be noticable to you, but you car could certainly roll on stuff like that if it popped out of gear for one reason or another. Using your e-brake doesn't hurt anything, its not like its difficult to access or use. Just set it so you don't have to worry about your car rolling across a parking lot like some people have told stories before. I had my friends car roll down my street into the neighbors yard from him being a moron and not setting his e-brake. If you can give me 1 good reason NOT to use your e-brake, then you'll have an argument. Until then, just use it.

With all of this about the e-brake, I have decided not to use it any more on any vehicle. Not even my CL-S6... :P

Well if your too stupid or old to notice that your parking brake handle is stick up like a foot in the air above anything else on your console then you deserve to get your shit fucked up. USING the parking brake means taking it off to, not just setting it.

True, but the 01 & 02 is on the FLOOR. No handle to see.
I guess during the day you might not notice the dash light either right away if you’re looking straight ahead.

This is too funny.

My girlfriend's father drove 150 miles in a rental Tuarus with the e-brake on. He was wondering why the car smelled funny when he got home.

The e-brake is a safety thing. Not a transmission thing. You need to use the e-brake once in awhile or you will have problems with it not working if you ever do have a hill to park on. Gravity can have a strange effect on a 3500lb object on an incline, with wheels.

have you ever noticed when you park the car on a hill, put it in park, it rolls a bit and then hits the gear.

then you come back later and its hard to switch out of park? its because the weight of the car is on teh transmission, and its nice and easy to shift if you use the brake

now im not expert, but something inside me says that its probably healthier (although probably not required) to do

I only use the e-brake when I lift the car. Besides that, by the name alone, one would tend to think that it's to be used in case of an emergency.

I only ever used the e-brake in my CLS if it was parked on a dang hill. rest of the time the locking pin in the trans is enough, thanks.
