My dad is in the market for a car...
well my dad is in the market for a car. i thought he wanted to trade our '96 4runner for the new one that just came out but we havent been to the dealer. i've been telling him just go for the sequoia (sp) but i dont get anything out of him. in this week's paper he saw a good deals for the TLS but my mom wasnt having it. he told me that if he got the TL he would drop it like mine. since i got my rims i think my dad wants to do the same. today he was following me in his car on the way home and once we got home he was just like your car looks so good on the road. at the auto show he said he really liked the bmw 530 but now he says its not in his price range. so what else is there in the 30k price range thats decent and has decent aftermarket. my dad's the modding type i guess i know where i got it from
.
.
my brother in law just picked up a 2003 seqoia limited on christmas eve, white w/ tan leather. he's loving it, i got a chance to drive it a bit and it is very nice, much better than the expedition they traded in on it.
my father is also thinking of trading his expedition in for one.

Well the 4-runner is as sporty as a SUV as u can get, I figure he wants something sporty. he may want to stay Toyota, as I am guessing the truck was bulletproof. The 2004 Camry will have the 3.3 liter 240 V-6. For the price, the TL/CL is very hard to beat as well.

I assume your dad wants to buy a practical car, not something for pure fun, so these are the stuff I want to recommend, pretty much the same as others' suggestions:
1. Infiniti G35 sedan(In my opinion this one fits ages from 20s to 60s)
2. Honda Accord EX V6 sedan(Just too common)
3. Lexus ES300(Lots of mid-aged and gray-haired dads have this one)
4. Acura TSX(would come out in April 03, but only with 4 cylinder engine)
5. Honda Pilot EX
If he could wait, try to wait for the all new Acura TL, I assume this one would be nice.
Yeah I still think Japanese vehicles are more reliable so I only recommend them.

yea he's thinkin of the pilot too. dont know how much he is considering it though. my dad is pretty convinced into buying a japanese car. he says euro cars may be nicer but less reliable than jap cars. i know he wants reliability over luxury.
Go for the TL. Mom is probably just objecting to the "S" type. (Shouldn't we really be call our cars the "Type YES"?). We have a TL, 1999 in the family, and it is a real nice car.
And regarding Japanese cars in general, and Toyota in particular, let me tell you something: (I work for Illinois Tool Works, I am considered the company expert in metal finishing, particularly powder coating. Your aluminum wheels are powder coated. I have patents regarding powder coating. here goes...)
#1 Our Acuras in particular, and lexus, toyota and others, have such high quality paint jobs on them for one reason only. The Japanese do not give a shit about their environment! All the old stuff that makes paint good (lead, cadmium, chrome) are allowed in Japan, and they ain't allowed here. (I know, I know...most Acuras are now made in America, I am going back a few years when every Acura came from Japan.)
#2. The next time you pass a Toyota with more than 10,000 miles on it, take a good, close look at the paint on the front of the car. You will probably see hundreds of chips on the hood and front bumper and fenders. Due to cost reasons, Toyota does not use an anti chip agent in their paint! You get what you pay for, but I will bet Lexus used an anti chip agent.
#3. Studys show that when you enter a new car showroom, you actually do NOT NOTICE THE CAR. What you do notice, is the quality of the finish, the paint job. I recently went on a trip for work, and rented a Camry with 8,000 miles on it. For the number of chips on the front of this car, if I were Toyota, I would be embarassed!
I am working on becoming the first person to entirely prime, color coat, and clear coat a car in history. I will spare you the details, but here is what powder coating is about. Your aluminum wheels are powder coated on your acura. Powder coatings are a completely solvent free and therefore, environmentally friendly painting process. Essentially it involves grounding (electrically) a metal object, (negatively charged), and spraying a positively charged plastic powder at it, which will adhere. After completely curing the powder, we have a paint that has about ten time the quality of any liquid paint I can think of. Plastic, after all, does not rust. The drawback to powder painting is that the "orange peel" characteristics are high (undesirable). But for stuff like shock absorbers, springs, etc, the stuff is unbeatable! Take care of your paint job. You would not believe the time, effort and money that goes into painting your car. And a final thought...if you keep your cars three years or less, waxing is unnecessary. The next time you see a BMW Z3, take a look at the top, clear coat. That, my friend, is a powder coating (the color coat is still liquid)!

thats a no on the mom objecting to the S part. i got my CLS at 18 whereas most moms arents safe with their kids driving cars with this much power so theres no problem in getting an S.
I agree on the TL-S, pretty hard to beat. Maybe the new Accord or the A4. Us old guys still like to mod, i'm probably older than your Dad (49). When i stop modding, they can just put me out to pasture

omg, you're older than my mom.why isnt there much talk about the EVOVIII only one person mentioned it, i think thatd be an awesome car for the money if mitsubishi has their shit together. under 30k. expect TONS of aftermarket parts for this.
or the new 4runner, that should have some good aftermarket and TRD parts available, the 4Runner is my choice for SUV in that range. Toyota quality and the only real SPORT and UTILITY vehicle on the market. (IMO put some big ass off roading tires on it and shazam!)
o yeah, and just wait a couple months for the 04 TLS. see how that shapes up. i dunno about aftermarket support but it is sold in Japan so maybe moderate moding capabilities.
any one of those sounds like a good idea to me. good luck!
