My CLS almost killed me in auto drive.
This is not funny but when you think about it, its really something. The car would not want to stop driving. This is what happened. I got on the highway in sports shift. Was in second gear going about 40 mph then had to slow down because of a car infront of me. So i let go of the accelerator and instead of slowing down the car started to speed up. So i changed lanes and thought, "Hmm this is strange, why the hell is the car speeding up". So next thing i do is switced to D5 to see if it would make any difference. And it didnt. The car kept on speeding up. I checked if crusie control was on and it was not. About a mile goes by and the car is still not slowing down. BTW i am driving on my brakes at this time to keep the car from speeding too much. My brakes are pushed to the max and the best that i got the car to slow down in 30mph. So next thing i do is call up my mechanic and told him what is happening. Oh yeah, lucky for me this was around 8pm so there was no traffic. After couple of minutes of talking, mechanic tells me to put the car in neutral and turn off the engine. Finally the car stopped, mechanic comes over and checkes it over. The car is parked and we turn on the engine and the engine automatically starts revving up all the way to 5000 rpm. It just wants to go. So what he does is disconnect the cruise control throttle cable and that fixed the problem. No more revving up and wanting to take off. He put the cruise control cable back and tested it out and no more problems. Then i slowelly drove it back home. Now i am kinda paranoid. HEHE.

I'm just suprised you didnt think of popping it in neutral before....
#1 maxing out the brakes
AND
#2 picking up your cell phone to ask for advice.
Popping it in neutral should always be the first reaction.
But yeah...talk about Knight Rider.

Yikes, i'd be paranoid to drive that car again
I'm sure ur car is under warranty so make sure u get the dealer to diagnose that.
Tho i wouldnt be surprised if they 'couldnt duplicate the problem' or tried to blame it on u for not bringing in ur car to them for ur services - (i assume u dont cos u have a mechanic who came TO u)
btw - not many wouldve thought about shifting it in neutral at a time like that so no biggie

yeah the pads are fairly new, the dealer changed them 3500 miles ago. so they still should be ok. I am going to call the dealer tomorrow but i am afraid that they might not be able to find the problem. But heck, its worth a shot.

I ran this story with my brother in law and apparently he's seen it before with his cousin's accord. Depending on your scenario it could be a hand full of possibilities, but with my brother in law's case, his cousin just recently installed an aftermarket stereo system and apparently the shop who installed it somehow accidentally tampered with the electronic cruise control lines.
Just as you described, the engine would slowly continue to accelerate without the gas pedal being pressed, even though the brake pedal was pushed, and the cruise control lights werent on. Easily fixed...but scary if it was your first time ever seeing something like it.

in my exploder last winter, the factory mats froze hard, and curled up (bec. of the high quality
) and got stuck on top of the gas pedal one day. i had to throw 'er in neutral and let it rev up to the redline. i shut the car off and rolled it to a stop in the snow bank ... just crazy ... brand new ford truck. i hated it before then anyways.

deja vu back to the Audi days when people would b scared to park it in the garage
glad to see nothing bad happened to u or anyone else...if it was the cc throttle, i'd make sure nothing is in the vicinity of the throttle cables that can get lodged in there since the cc and the accelerator throttle wires r right next to each other...that would make for a sticky situation :shakehd:

just talked to the service department at the dealer. They were pretty shocked about the case. Have an appointment at 1pm today to have them look at it. hopefully they wontgive me any shit about all my aftermarket mods. we'll see.

This is an all to familiar sounding story to me.
My father was driving the car home from work one day and the same thing happened, the engine kept on redlining itself. He went straight to the dealer and they said the route of the problem was linked to a computer chip that controlled the idle of the car... it simple burnt out. I really dont' know what i would have done if i was driving at the time...

I had this happen to my integra,, sort of,, the cpu wasn't letting the car pass emissions,,, I loosened the bolt holding it to the frame under the passinger seat, I wanted it loose to compare it to used one I found in a bone yard, anyway as soon as I started the car it red lined,,, turns out the bolt was the ground for the cpu.. ??? Good thing it didn't come loose while I was driving..

Just got back from the dealer and they did not find any problems from the diagnostic. Told me that if it happens again, just do what i did last time and have it towed to them directly then they can see what the problem is. Oh well. At least i didnt get charged for anything.

As for myself, I would let the engine rev up. I would rather have the ability to drive the car safely than worry about the engine. Look at it this way...the engine has a rev limiter...and if something were to happen because of it overrevving...it would be covered under warranty because the throttle was stuck. Either way, this is an Acura design issue that should be covered under warranty.
Good thing this is rare. If it was as rampant as the tranny issue...I would say that this would be alot more dangearous than a tranny getting stuck in 2nd gear.

yeah i was kinda hoping that they would change the entire cruise crontrol system but according to their diagnostic tools, nothing is wrong with the vehicle so i am kinda stuck with what i have. but so far, the problem has not arisen again.

That same exact thing happened to me in my former 1993 BMW 525i. Everything you described, except the cruise control was not the problem.
After calling AAA to come help me, we found out that the floor mat carpet was stuck in the weirdest way, pushing the accelerator down. It seriously took him over 20 minutes to figure it out. I didn't even bother checking it earlier. Trust me, we both felt like complete idiots.
