My AEM CAI Install plus some ???'s
My AEM CAI Install plus some ???'s
So NYMEX closed early today because of the storm on the East coast. What does that mean? I went home early and waited for UPS to come w/ my CAI. Around 4:30 he finally shows up. I get my tools and head onto the top floor of my garage where I can work out in the open. It's a gorgeous day here in Houston for anyone who cares. Installation took about a little under an hour and a half. Would have been faster, but was kinda hesistant to replace the hard hoses that Acura had under there with the hoses supplied from AEM. Thought about different ways to go around this issue, but after much deliberation, thought what the heck and finished up. Wound up with some scratches on the hands but would I expect any less from this type of surgery? Would post pictures but alas I have no digital camera. Maybe I'll borrow one, cause the red intake looks awesome on a white Type S. At any rate, I have a few questions for people who installed theirs?
1. Do you think the filter sits kinda low? Mine is actually sitting right on the lower plastic covering. It's not sitting exactly in the middle of the vertical space in there. What do you guys think of this? Would seem to me that if it was sitting a little higher it could benefit from more air flow around the filter. I think I might remedy this by adding a bypass valve, therefore I can cut some length off.
2. There is a big hole in the fender well around the pipe. Would this allow hot air from the engine compartment down into the filter area. Not that big of a deal, but if I have some time I will probably find something to cover that area.
3. The filter itself seems kinda small. On my old '94 Pathfinder, I had a Jim Wolf intake that had a filter that had like a 6" wide opening. I actually still have the pop filter, as they call it, if anyone is interested.
4. After I installed everything I grabbed the filter and moved it around a little bit to make sure everything was nice and tight. I noticed that the throttle body moved too... or had a lot of body movement. Would this be a problem?
At any rate, had been waiting forever for this. My major concern is the filter sitting on top of the plastic underbody covering. Anyone with insight please post.

Yep, I think that is pretty low. Thanks for the info...hadn't seen it in the other AEM CAI posts yet. I would think about cutting the pipe a little higher and reinstalling the bottome of the stock air-filter assembly to attempt blocking the engine's "bad air".
And yes, I wonder about that small filter also. However, smaller ones (HKS) are used on RX-7s, Supras, and such. So good question, I'd like to know. Especially since the stock intake has a bigger filer (which to me =s better air intake capacity)
Can't be too good on the TB to be moving...thinking about what is doing when you punch at 55mph in 2nd??

It would probably be anywhere from $40-$60 to have someone install it. But this is definitely something you can do by yourself. The AEM instructions are not good at all... needs pictures. Yeah, I'm still concern about how low the filter hangs. I mean it sits right on top of the underbody covering. I can actually see and touch the filter through the opening in the covering. That sucks cause if water splashes up it could 1) get dirtier quicker and 2) suck in some water. Also if water got inside it could pool around the filter and would cause more wear and tear. Definitely needs some modification. I wonder if the midification will affect the noise... i.e. cause unwanted noise? Come on guys with the AEM cai, any insights? How about anyone else who have used AEM in other applications?
Buddha I think you are making a larger deal than necessary. I installed my AEM Friday night at like 10pm after work. (Couldn't wait till the morning
).
The movement in the throttle body is not a problem, it is a rubber mount, big deal; we had a "mini-meet" this past weekend in the Bay Area and noticed the intake plenum solenoid is also on a similar flexible mount.
The filter, (which is not too small by the way, we had a 500+ horsepower turbo supra at the meet this weekend with a single HKS filter smaller than ours is.
As for the placement of the intake filter, be sure you put your's as far up the pipe as possible and you can direct air directly from the opening in the splash guard.
Finally, the results. Last time I gteched my car with headers only I ran a 6.38 0-60, when it was about 75 degrees and I had 3/4 of a tank. This past saturday after the AEM install, in about 60 degree weather, and low on gas I ran a 5.90 which ain't to shabby. With a better start a 5.8 is in the bag!

i installed my AEM CAI on sat. the original instructions suck, so i used that along with xephyer's instructions for his CAI on his website...yeah...my filter seems to be resting on the rubber splashguards/moldings as well...im also concerned about the filter being directly above the hole in the splashguard...its been raining the past couple days and was worried about water going in it so i just taped up the holes directly below it. you guys think water getting in something to worry about?

1. The length of the inlet tube is specifically tuned per application.
2. Don't worry about the filter getting wet, they are washable therefore water will not harm them.
3. You can slide the filter in and out inorder to address how high or low it ends up. This doesn't really apply cause mine is pushed all the way up the opening and this barely clears the psuedo fog lights.
4. They will take my suggestions under advisement.
5. Will mail a CARB exempt sticker when they get approval provided we show them a receipt.
6. The throttle body is made to have some play in movement.
I could post the email but it rambles. But they were nice and prompt.
