My '01 CL Type-S

I just bought a '01 CL Type-S that had 57K miles on it. The interior is spotless (a lady in NJ owned it) but the wheels and tires need a little attention. If it wasn't for this site, I probably would not have bought the car. I didn't realize how common wheel scarring is with the Type-S wheels. Since I bought the car, I have been nothing but happy. The Type-S is probably the best car I've ever had. I was just wondering what kinds of concerns should I have with the car while I get closer to 100K miles? As of right now, the tranny feels good and the motor is strong. Any feedback would be more than helpful. P.S. This is a great site.

Welcome to the club Always good to see another satisfied CL owner.

As for things to watch for.... other than the tranny, there's not really anything out of the ordinary that you should be watching. Just keep an eye out for the normal wear and tear problems any car might have as it approaches/eclipses the 100K mark.

What color is it? post some pics.

Welcome. Tranny is the biggest issue. I've also had the motor mounts changed along with a couple sensors. You're a 1000 miles over the limit to get the extended warranty.

Don't worry about the wheels, just buy some nice aftermarket ones. Do you have any plans for mods?

Enjoy.

No plan for mods, I want to keep it stock. I've always like the way it looks. It is white with the tan leather interior, no navigation. I will take some photos real soon and post. Thanks for the help with the transmission concerns. Keep the advice coming!!

I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s a common problem.
I would call it a common problem among BAD DRIVERS.

i think there is a difference between curb rash and scarring. Mine have never touched pavement but it looks as tho water/dirt got underneath the clear coat on the rim and kind of bubble it out..looks pretty bad and only happened over this winter. Im dreading what next year will look like...

You're going to have a hard time not modding anything if you stick around here. Eventually, Acurazine will get you, and it won't let you go. It's like crack

Congrats on the new ride! White/tan is an awesome combo!

As they said, watch out for the tranny - that's about it!

I'm hoping the lady from NJ didn't rag it out. I don't think she did, she just scraped a lot of curbs. I'm trying to find someone in the DFW metroplex to refurbish or replace. The tranny sounds and feels o.k. This car is a blast!!

I feel you on 'keeping it stock'... I'm not so crazy about all these modifications ppl do to their CLS just b/c I'm more than satisfied the way my car's running since I picked it up from the dealer... it's amazing how quickly you gain more speed from 70+mph... got to love it...
I'm actually in the middle of upgrading my sound system tho... stock headunit, speakers, amp and sub in the rear speakers just don't do it for me... looking to spend little more than what headers would cost me but i think it would be worth it.. I guess I'm in a different position than you where I still have 32k remaining on my original warrnty... last thing I do is to modify my car to avoid the warranty...
So my only advice would be...... enjoy it!!!

Cool

Welcome to the forum! I like the the white and tan which is what I have. Nothing you can really watch out for. If the trans goes, it goes. Same for the motor / tran mounts and rotors warping or throttlebody going north.

I have an easy question for all you CLS owners. Both of my road lamps are out. I read the owners manual and cannot find an interior switch or fuse for them. Are they supposed to come on automatically with the lights? Is there a fuse I need to check first? Do I have to buy the replacement bulbs from the dealer? Any help would be great.

they come on with headlights; there is no special switch like TL's. The fuse is in the fuse box on the end of the passenger side dash. Open passenger door and you will see the fuse box.

I want to put 235-45-17 on my stock rims. I'm sure it will look good, but will it ride o.k.? Will I have any tires rubbing with I turn??

Sure it will, better handling, and if you lower it a bit, the handling will be even better. It will not rub...

OK, I just hit 60K. 2K in three weeks, not bad. A local oil change place is charging $80 for a tranny flush. As far as I can tell, this is the original trans. Should I get it done? Any suggestions? Would I be better off having Acura do it??

I would wait to get it done, because when your tranny goes north, you will get a rebuilt one with fresh tran fluid.

That is a good idea, it is feeling a little rough around 2nd gear, I'm just wondering how long I have before it goes. I just hope it is before 100K

Everything I read on this site is telling me that my CL-S have 260hp. How accurate is this? I have 60K miles and the original tranny

Here's an easy one. What is the best thing to use for gum on a leather seat. Some ass put gum in my chair at the bar and I didn't notice it until I was driving home

Damn that sucks, they sell gum remover in auto zone, it's basically a spray with some cold stuff that would freeze it and that way you can peel it off, or just use some plain ice and peel it off with a paper towel

Rub ice on the gum. It will get hard. Then peel it off.

Yeah welcome to the club. My first car I had was a 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme 2D. I kept it as nice as I coudl but lets face it it was a cutlass. I am a recent college grad and got a nice cerdit rating. I then traded in the cutty for an 03 CL-S 6MT with nav I saw that just came in at a dealership. A slight upgrade don't ya think?

I agre on mods and that acurazine is drawing me in. I am tempted to get a catback exhaust for it from comptech and go from there. I also really want to do the runninglight mod for my CL and throw in the piaa's.

As far as the 260hp question that is not WHP or horsepower transfered to the wheels. This is the way all cars are quoted pretty much. From what I have read these stock dyno in the upper 190's but things like elevation and maintanence has a big factor in that aswell. I hope this helps

i would get the tranny flush, but shop around. i did mine at 15K and there were metal shavings stuck to the magnetic drain plug. did it again at 25K. also, has the CL had the 'jet kit' installed from the recall?

for the driving/fog lights, many acura-cl peep say piaa 19224, but i like the 19173 because they are the exact size as the factory bulbs. the 19224s are bigger and you may need to open the holes on the housing a bit. (the 19224 xtreme white are BLUE when off, and LIGHT BLUE when on...i hate them...it says WHITE and they dont match the headlights).

the CL has enough power for me so i havent done any performance enhancing mods...and you can only do so much with a FWD honda, which i think is a waste of time and money modding a CL for speed...i've just gone with the cosmetic mods...

Andre, as far as I can tell, this car has the original transmission, I need to go to the dealer and have them run the VIN. I know what you mean about mods, I might keep everything stock and start with rims and then suspension. Thanks for the great advice

I know you guys are going to rag on me about this, but what's up with the new Eclipse?? From the commercial, it looks kinda cool. I know this is a ricer car and Mitsubishi will make about a million of them, but is that 261 HP V6 all it's cracked up to be?? What were their other V6 Eclipse's like??

Guys, I need help. I am seriously thinking of buying some '04-'05 TL wheels with stock tires (235/45/17). My car has not been lowered. Will this work?? Will the wheels project too much?? Will they look o.k., or terrible?

I don't think that would look good. I dislike the 04 TL's wheels even on the 04 TL, and I think it's terrible looking on older CL/TL cars. The CL-S has nice rims from the factory!
