Motorcycle help!!!

guys,

I am interested in getting a Yamaha YZF-R6, but I am a fairly short guy (5'-5"). When I seat on the R6, both my feet barely touch the ground when the bike is 90 degree standing. Am I out of lucky with this motorcycles? How tall should the bike be? should both my heels on the ground?

Yes you should be able to put your feet flat on the ground. You can still ride/stop on your tippy toes, but it will not be safe. Plus you'll look a bit silly.

You can have the bike lowered, it will solve the problem.

However it does throw the weight balance off a bit. But nothing too drastic (well, unless your a professional racer... then you might really notice)

just to be exact, only the tips of my toes are on the ground when the bike is standing 90 degree.

You can have an inch removed from the spring & kickstand to solve your problem...or

buy a chopper...

If you dont wanna lower the bike, you can simply get the seat shaven a bit. I know alot of guys that ride that are under 5'5 and ride with just thier toes on the ground.

I'm only 5'4 and I ride a Yamaha R1. I lowered my bike and I also shaved my seat. Now I'm 100% flat footed.

Here's a few pics of my bike

can't you adjust the pre-load & damping so you'll compress the rear suspension a bit more than average?

Drink your milk!!!!

Lowering it and shaving the seat are your best choices. I'd shave the seat first and see how that works. You can also get some real thick riding boots that have a good inch in the sole of the boot.

Also note, if you can barely tippy toe, it'll be a bitch to maneuver the bike around to park when your engine is off.

pre-load & damping won't make much difference, sepecially if you don't weigh that much.

Don't get a R6 for your first bike. When (NOT if) you dump it, you'll discover why.

runnerX, no disrespect but I agree with NiteQwill on this one. An R6 is not a bike to get for a first timer. People think because it's a 600cc bike that it's the one to get for a beginner. The truth is, an R6 is more like a 750cc because of its lightness and engine maximization.

I'd suggest getting an older Honda F 600 series bike, something like an F2. I ride an R1 and the only difference between an R1 and R6 is top speed. Along with dumping it (which you will when you are a beginner - everyone does starting off), the cost of repairs will be extremely expense. Plus think about what will happen to you.

I'm not trying to be a d#ck about this, just looking out for a fellow acura-cl member.

I'll chime in and say that is hot for a 1st bike. I started on XL250's and then my first "street" bike was a Seca II 600. Only after 5-6 years of riding the Seca and knowing when I could grind the pegs do I feel comfortable on something faster...haha... the downside is now that I'm 35 I want something like a Bonneville or a KLR 650...

NiteQwill and JonesUMD,

I know what you mean. I decided to get a used Kawasaki Ninja 250 for now after reading www.r1-forum.com (stole it from JonesUMD's website )

JonesUMD, those are nice bikes on your website.
