The only charge incurred is updated DVD discs.

Hellz no. After spending all that money for Navi, either factory or after market, they'd have some nerve to charge for the use of it.

There are some services that are available now with a monthly fee that let you track where the car is through the web. But I think it's because it's a cel connection to a central office of some sorts.
Mostly for parents to keep track of where their kids are.

Messed up, I heard it on the radio yesterday.. about $20/mo. I'd fucking dissapear from my house if my parents ever did that shit to me when I was growing up.

Other than that type of crap, no charge.

Nextel is offering with the new I730 a Navigation feature for and additional .80 cents a day. The phone will talk to you liek the navi in the cars.

better invest in Nextel stocks

Some car manf. do charge a monthly fee for their nav. I know one of my co-workers pays like $10-20 a month for his navi. He gets free updates wirelessly though... He could be BS'ing me, but I dunno why he would. Can't remember what kinda car he has though ... I think its a Navigator.

Global Positioning System signals are free....for everyone with a compatible receiver. Period. There is NO WAY to bill for it's usage. Well I take that back. If I send you a bill and mark it "GPS service (unlimited).....$20" then I guess I just billed you.

If you're paying, you're paying for something else but you're NOT paying for GPS coordinates.

Well, I meant he paid $20 a month for map updates (like we pay $200 for the updated DVD through Acura). I know GPS is free to use to triangulate where you are.

Its possible though that some manufacturer's NAV software requires you to subscribe to keep the NAV working. Don't know if my co-worker has the option to not update and just not get map updates or not... In that case, I'd just pay for 1 month every once in awhile when I wanted new maps

People have to pay for OnStar service but not GPS. Maybe your friend is paying for OnStar.
