Mods and selling the CL-S... Eventually

I am not planning on selling the CL-S anytime soon. Love the car, I drive way to much to drive my new car on the highway so I'm keeping the CL-S.

As my car depreciates at a rapid pace this question comes to mind when talking about parting out the CL-S. When it comes time to sell and the amount of money I have in mods on the car. I don't mind the initial money I spent on mods because they were all well worth it.

I have probably spent over $4,000 in mods on my car and at this point my car is probably only worth $6,000.

So I want to know, you guys who are modded, do you plan on stripping the majority of your mods and selling them individually or do you think you will just keep them on the car because the hassle isn't worth it.

Car w/ Mods= $6,000

Car w/ Mods= $5,500
Mods sold = $1,000
= $6,500

So what does everyone else plan on doing?

I believe it all depends on where you sell the car. If you are able to sell the car on the forum or to a car enthusiast you may get more money for your car with mods versus selling the car privately or to a dealership. My bet would be to put the stock stuff back on , sell the mods for what you can and try to sell the car privately.

However, in your case, seeing how your car was recently restored, I would just drive the car to the ground, you would probably lose alot of money if you try to sell the car seeing how it was in a major accident, that is my two cents, but I would just keep the car. Whatever you decide, best of luck with you. I have contemplated parting out my car, but I cant seem to pull the trigger because I feel that I might lose the money that I spent on the mods, so I'm going to stick it for a little longer.

I've got mine listed for sale now.

I need a truck, and some money, so the best thing for me to do is sell my CL. I'm gonna part my mods out first, the average buyer wont want/appreciate what I have done to it.

Ha, that's what I was thinking to tell someone.

When I decide to sell my car, they can bring their CL-S to my house and for $1,000. I will de-part my car and my mods and then install on their car and take their stock parts.

As for my accident, yes it was a lot of damage but honestly, the car has no driving issues at all. Everything damaged was pretty much cosmetic except for the exhaust. I suppose I got lucky it was a semi truck because it sits so much higher that it just smooshed in the top part and left most of the suspension alone.

Even after the accident I can go any speed (don't want to say how fast) without any driving quality loss, I would never EVER drive a car on the highway 40k miles a year if it wasn't in perfect condition.

As for this reducing the value of my car, lol, i don't see how it can get much lower, being it has 175k miles on it now.

I just don't have the patience to part out my car just to make an extra $500 vs selling it whole.

As for losing money, I have this car paid off and the resale of mods, I'd be glad if I got 25-50% back of the original value.
More power to you guys who do.

I'll prolly just leave the XS headers, mugen cooling, pnp upper IM, pulleys on, and 03 tails/headlights. <--- reason for leaving those is I threw away all the stock parts...

I'll remove intake, test pipe, big bore tb, spacers (if gaskets arent fkd up), kakimoto muffs, coilovers, camber kits, sways, and strut braces...

For what it's worth, I would hold on to your car for a couple more years unless you NEED the money. The used car market is so shitty right now, you will be selling at rock bottom. It's not that your car will magically jump up in value, but I seriously doubt it will drop much over the next couple of years. I could be wrong, but you'd be hard pressed (at least in my area) to find an old Integra GSR for under $5000. To me it seems out of whack to have a newer car (from the same mfg with an extra 80-100 hp and more bells and whistles) sell for only an extra $1k. Just be patient if you can afford to.

Lol, thanks but I didn't say I was selling the car. I already have an 08 TL also, the CL-S is my travel car and it's paid off. So whatever I would get for the CL would be profit in essence.

I was just wondering what other people would do at the time of selling their modded car.

But you are correct about the used car market, it really sucks.

I was actully gonna sell my car in September 08 and get into a 05/06 RL.
I work in sales for a GM company so my pay hit a brick wall litterly!
I had it listed for $6k on craigslist and could have got $5k for it, had cash in hand just could not do it and finance a RL making NO money! The payment i could have handled but then insurance increase would be hard on me and times are tough so gonna wait till the economy gets back on track!

So since then I did ALOT on mainence to the car cuz im gonna hold on to it for about anouther year or two. had it for 9 years next month whats anouther year or two! I did the tranny fluid tranny mounts, changed sway bar bushings, cabin filter cleaned CAI. all I gotta do now is Struts and flush radiator fluid, change brake and power steering fluid and she will be as good as new.

BTW when i was trying to sell her she had 155k miles and now has 160k.
had a new tranny put in at 100k so it still drive nice, just very loud on rough roads but I think the new struts will fix that!

Mine is actually very quiet on the roads, I have grand touring tires (Turanza w/serenity) best tires I have ever purchased, not the greatest handling but amazing all around.

The ride is rough because I have my suspension set for that so I don't mind it, but when I hit the bumps, it still sounds solid as hell.

I honestly like driving my CL-S as much as I like driving my TL. The interior of the TL is much nicer but I just feel like I can drive my CL much faster and I feel more secure.

Certain things I will be selling seperately. The headers will stay, as those were a pain in my ass to install. But the icebox, k-sports, wheels, and stereo will all be in the black market.

Only when the time comes, of course.

I would say that if it costs a person a considerable amount of money to un-install...probably leave it on there.

Any simple bolt-ons could be handled rather easily.

It's those people who completely part-out their vehicles...I just don't know how they do it without losing their minds.

I completely agree, when I see people pulling off their $100 headers (original price) and are selling them for $50.

Give me some help. If I was trading my car into a dealership because I can't get a buyer. So I can do all the work and wouldn't have to worry about paying a mechanic.

1.) Comptech Headers- This is where I'm torn, bought them new for $1,050 I think.

2.) Comptech Sways front and rear- People can get the rear for like $130 I think and its the same thing pretty much.

3.) UR Pulley

4.) Comptech Ice Box

5.) TB and manifold spacers- no way am i uninstalling these

6.) HR OE springs and Tokico Illumina shocks

7.) Comptech Tranny Cooler

8.) Neuspeed tower brace

9.) Navi to DVD and Dvd player

I think that's it. I really feel the only ones I might uninstall are the headers and navi and dvd stuff.

Eh, whatever, knowing me I probably won't pull anything off when I decide to sell it. lol

I would remove:

* Comptech Tranny Cooler (I just bought one but I thought it's a simple install/uninstall)
* Comptech Headers (If you can do them yourself...otherwise you are going to lose 50% of your money back)
* Icebox (just remove the bumper...1 hour job, you could DIY)
* Neuspeed Tower Brace....(Bolt on correct, Take that off, People love Neuspeed items on Acurazine)
* Navi Stuff.

That's what I would do.

You read my mind ^^^

I think the only difference would be that I keep the Tranny Cooler on there. For 35 bucks I could sell it for, I thought it was slightly annoying to install.

CL's aren't depreciating that rapidly anymore... we've hit flat part of the depreciation curve... I lost thousands per year when I first bought mine, but I'm only losing hundreds a year now...

Most of the time, it's better to part out the car, sell the mods, and sell (or trade in) the car in stock form.

If you're not doing the work yourself, paying someone to remove the mods and re-install the stock parts might cost more than what selling the mods separately will bring in, so selling the car with the mods included would be better in this case...

Well obviously the first few years the car loses the majority of its value and I definitely feel your pain on that.

But what I mean is that I am putting so many miles on my car, I'm wary if anyone would even consider buy a 2001 car with 225k miles on it, no matter the condition.

So even though the kbb says one amount, the point is, can I actually sell it due to the ridiculous mileage.

I don't think the hassle of removing everything and putting all of the stock shit back on is really worth it unless of course you are doing the work yourself.

Well with your mileage really high perhaps you could consider a motor swap, it would be less then buying a new car and you would still be able keep the car. You don't even have to do a 6 speed swap you could even just do a swap of just a type s motor with less mileage. Just throwing it out there, I would try to keep that car as long as possible and a motor swap might enable you to do that.

Eh, I just wanted to start a topic that was slightly different.

I like having two cars so I don't see myself selling this car anytime soon. Even when I get decide to move on, I'm probably just going to end up giving the CL to my fiancees mom since she is getting hit hard by these times. But there is no way I'm giving her a lowered car with performance mods on it and tinted windows. lol funny thought if you saw her.

But I wonder if I could get someone for a $1,000 to buy all my mods and I'll do the uninstall on my car and the install on theirs.

I mean, my motor seems ridiculously strong. I drive lots of highway miles and use mobil 1 oil and mobil filter, I change the oil every 10k miles and get about 3 to 3.5 quarts out when draining it. So I'm not burning much oil and I still get about 29-31mpg on the highway depending on how I drive.

I love these motors. I hope I didn't jinx myself.

Some people would not care how many miles are on it as long as the body still looks nice and it gets from point A to point B.
I got so many people that called me from patterson or newark and the first question they asked is what condition the body was in , if there were any dents or scratches, I would say it drives great still, and they would say i dont care how it drives, "how does it look"
So i think as long as the body looks good and the car still drives, dont even have to drive good, just drive there will still be a market for a newer body Acura ( depending on where u live)

Ha, I've been to Newark for work and let me tell you, I can't see how anyone keeps a car in good condition with those roads.

As for my cars body, I only have one small dent on the drivers side door. Besides that, the entire car is dent free.

Like I said B4 even with 225k miles, as long as the car runs you are prob looking at 3-4K.
Think about it the HID lights and all the parts that power them are worth at least 500 the 4 rims and tires are worth at least 500. and thats just a tip of the iceburg if you part the whole car out prob looking at around 4-5k

That's true, I probably would make more money parting the entire car out vs selling it whole.

Only if I had a great big garage and a shitload of free time that would be somewhat fun.

Pitts, the truck I'm about to buy has 173k miles on it, I'll probably pick it up for 2500-3500 and if it dies in a year, I could scrap it and get my $ back, or put a new motor in it for less than the cost of buying a lower mileage car.

my 2 cents. lol

I have been trying to decide on this topic for a few months now. I have so much in the car that I hate to trade in or sell as is. I feel like I could do better parting out but it is such a hassle! I don't have a lot of the stock parts either like headers, springs, and sways. I guess I could part out only the supercharger and gauges. Best case scenario would be if someone local wanted to swap parts and could trade stock parts for my stuff, but what are the odds of that?
