Mb Sl600

Have you guys seen the latest Car & Driver performance results for this car?

0-60 : 3.6s
1/4-mile: 11.9s @ 120mph

Unbelievable!! Gosh... it just SMOKES the SL55 - that's turbo power!! (Yes, I know its a 12-cylinder)

btw, the SL55's have been known to provide those times. I know a guy who just traded his SL55 for a SL600 and he does miss his SL55 but does enjoy the SL600. He does say it isn't as responsive, and both cars are pretty modded

The 911 Turbo 'might' hit a 3.9s 0-60 and the GT2 has some trouble hitting a 3.8s 0-60 and the GT3 hits a 4.0s 0-60. About the only cars that will take this Merc are the ENZO and SALEEN S7R and FORD GTO - all of these on a 2x to 4x price premium!!

There is also another Chrysler 'concept' which is touted as a possible production car. It's called the ME412 - Mid Engine, 4 Turbo, 12 cylinder.

850hp and a 3000lb curb weight... 1.6lb / hp (the Enzo is 5lb / hp btw). 0-60 in 2.9s and 1/4-mile in 10.1 @ 148!!!! Man... you have to have a souped up civic to beat that

if a stock SL600 can run like that then I can't even imagine what a Brabus SV12 can do

3.6sec to 60 sounds a little optimistic.....I take C&Ds results with a grain of salt. No doubt the SL600 is fast, but 3.6sec I don't know.

Why not just forget everything and put a couple of rockets on it? Or is that a little slower than a fucking insane ass 6 liter twin turbo V12?

Remember that torque is a major player in acceleration times than horsepower... so the SL600 has a good 150ft-lbs of more torque than the SL55 - so go figure!

Buy the damn magazine if you want proof... why the hell would I make this up

If you doubt the magazine article... that's a valid opinion... just a matter of getting consensus.

Torque helps to a point...but after that, excessive torque, you just sit there spinning the tires...

From the guy I was telling you guys about, he says he thinks these times are a little out there. He said he got beat by a just chipped 996TT even w/ his renntech mods.

Just a thought, but would the extra weight of the S-class sedan be the culprit in comparison to the 2dr SL? However, I'm not sure it undercuts the weight by much. Anyone with weight data?

I watched a CL600 (those are v12turbo as well I think, right?) run 11.9 at Atco racetrack.

Wow...that's fast...
But, just as an FYI, the MB website lists the car as 4.7s from 0-100km/h...

firstly, it's 10 Gs more, and second... they see the hp figure is the same and it says AMG, so why not.

HP is about the same.... torque is significantly greater in the 600

i know that, but do old executives going through midlife crises know it too?

the SL market is not enthusiasts. the car is luxury before sport. no matter how fast it is, it's got a 5 speed auto. doesn't scream "sport" to me.

and i drive a 5AT CL-S, heh.

The point is the performance difference... who cares what the badge says - and if some bozo isn't going to pay the extra 10K for the added punch, that's fine.

I'd buy the V12TT

For those that care, the SL55 will have a better resale value.....600 Benz's historically drop like a rock.

The 55 is more of a driver's car (sporty), the 600 is softer and doesn't have the tiptronic controls on the steering wheel (U.S. model) where the SL55 does.

I'd rather have the SL55. For the reasons Beltfed listed (value, sports apeal) plus sound and upfront price. The SL600 sounds nice, but the SL55 w/ a nice exhaust takes the cake for me. The price difference is only $6K but I see no reason to spend it (mbusa.com). SL55s can pull lower mid 12s, so it's no slouch.

from mbusa.com:

2004 SL55 AMG
493hp @ 6100 rpm
516 lb-ft @ 2,750 - 4,000 rpm
0-60 4.5 seconds
4,319lbs

2004 SL600
493 hp @ 5,000 rpm
590 lb-ft @ 1,800 - 3,500 rpm
0-60 4.5 seconds
4,429lbs
