hey I just wanted to make a spare key for my CL .... I learned the hard way that a spare key made at a hardware store... unlocks the doors but won't start the car is there a way around to make one with without contacting a dealer

 

Yes, any key cut in the same shape as yours will unlock your doors, trunk, or glovebox. But it will not start your car.

And no, it won't trigger your alarm.

 

why won't it start it? is there a transponder in the key?

 

Yes the keys are transponder keys.

 

It has an immobilizer chip in the key that must be present for the car to start. Its a security feature so that the car can't be started with anything but the key that came with the car (or a factory replacement).

 

See a good locksmith. I got mines done for $35 instead of the dealer's $90

 

You can program the key yourself. It's outlined in the service manual. If someone wants to put up a scan of it. No longer have mine.

 

The dealer charged me $35 for a real spare
