Maintenance Schedule - Go by Date or Mileage?

So the friendly folks at my local Acura dealer informed me that it is coming time for my 84-month/105,000 mile maintenance.

Technically, since my car is an 03, they are right on the 84-month, but since I only have 61,000 miles, I had planned on waiting at least another couple years, as I only drive 10-12k/year.

You guys put any weight behind the date intervals for scheduled maintenance, or do you stick to mileage? Because techincally, I guess everyone with a 6-speed would be needing to do their 84-month/105k mile maintenance soon, but I doubt if most will, becuase the mileage is far lower.

Appreciate your Thanks

the reason they list both is so that you go by whichever comes first.. you could have a 1000-mile/year car and still need to do maintenance on it.

I agree with your points, it is just hard for me to justify doing a 105k mile service at 60k. Do you do oil changes every 3 months (or whatever interval Acura recommends), even if you only drive 500 miles? It seems things like valve adjustment are predominantly based on the mileage, not the age. Timing belt, I can see how that could get brittle with age.

i do my oil changes twice a year, to switch from 0w-20 to 5w-20. obviously that doesn't answer your question, but valve adjustment should be done when there's noise, and the timing belt should be done with time. i don't know about anything else on the 105 but the cars are getting old.. this just tend to wear out around this time (rubber hoses, gaskets, belts, etc)

105k service has timing belt, plugs, and checking clearance of valves. I am going off the "normal driving conditions" chart as it is driven in moderate temps year-round (Tampa, FL), and majority of trips over 5 miles w/out too much stop-and-go traffic.

Anybody ballpark what Acura charges for this service? I thought I had seen around $1,200 w/ labor?

I dunno, IMO you should maybe come to a reasonable time to do it. I'm sure at the 84-month 105k mile stage, they kind of assume you're at least CLOSE to 100k or so. However since they contacted you, there might be some issues if you decide to do it later. Even if it doesn't break, they still might give you crap...

My local Honda dealer quoted me $800. I checked with them first because they're only 8 miles from my home. The Acura dealership said $1000-$1200 and they're about 20 miles away.
Go figure.

which ever one comes first. years of wear and tear will weaken the belt. change it now before it snaps.

sure some members go over 7 years and 105k miles, but its like a ticking time bomb.

My 97 3.0Cl has about 60k, we did the 84 month service years ago but longer than 84 months, I am thinking about 2006 which would be 108 months.

x3

have a pos volvo with a failed t/belt at work that failed (a bearing actually, but still bent valves) like 9,000 miles before it was even recommend by volvo for mileage-wise, but was like 4 years overdue by volvo's age recommendation
and the sad part is he declined it like 4,000 miles ago when we recomended it to him, when he came in for a completely different problem, but we could hear a bearing making a hell of a noise from behind the t/belt cover (he does regret the decision to decline it earlier, it bite in the ass big time; the tow bill would have had basically paid for the labour to replace it before)

Interesting points. Appreciate the feedback. I think I will give them a call and set something up in the next month or so.

you can also go through an independent shop too, and don't have to go through the dealer, should be cheaper too, with the same quality of work or better (depends on the shop though, some can be even shittier though)
