Did you change the transmission fluid in intervals? If so, how long between? Do you have a Comptech tranny cooler? I'm trying to think of ways to enhance to longevity of my transmission.

The place that did the service didn't install the belt correctly or something is out of alignment. This has happen to a friend of my and the tech that did the work new exactly how he screwed up and fixed it.

i'd take it back to whoever did the work because they most likely fucked up your power steering pump. Happened to me when I had my UR pulleys installed, they got it figured out though without replacing the pump.

Unhappy

Of course this is one of the first threads I read tonight, LOL, I'm pretty sure my tranny blew up today. I was on cruise control at 80 when I noticed smoke coming out of the back. Slowed down and it was coming out of the hood. RPM's started shooting all over the dash. It freaked me and my two passengers out! The fun part was that I was 194 miles away from home where the dealer that replaced the 1st one at 85,000 miles was located. Tranny fluid was all over the bottom of the engine (which led to smoke), it was inside the wheel well front-left, covered the entire undercarriage to the mufflers and had even spattered up on my trunk where the emblems are by the time I stopped. I'm at 125,000 miles so I'm not looking forward to the call to the dealer in the morning. The tow was $680 I'm hoping road hazard insurance helps out here.

The engine started and purred like a kitten on the side of the road but when I put it in D and hit the gas nothing happened.

The weird thing is the 1st time it happened I had major slipping and today just BAM

Any advice anyone? The car is at Ed Voyles Acura in Atlanta.

Really? Would that make the car not drive at all? I have heard some knocking but only when turning the wheel all the way left while parking.

it wouldnt explain the rpms shooting all over. Im scared now. So you had no warning signs? or was it the major slipping?

Knocking/clicking when turning sounds like axle issues. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

No warning signs on this one at all. It had been driving normal.

I hit the brakes to stop the cruise control when I saw smoke and the rpm's shot up, I slammed it when I thought I was about to redline the engine. At first I thought the motor was gone but that's not it, thank goodness.

I'll let you guys know what I find out.

I went to the dealer (ed voyles atlanta) this morning. The tranny is shot

He gave me an estimate of about $3500 (new tranny, ecu, etc.)

I asked the advisor about the goodwill which I could tell he was hoping I wouldn't. I guess he thought I would just go along with $3500, LOL. He said I was past the warranty, 109,000 miles, blah, blah, blah. I told him I was hoping to get at least 80,000 miles out of this tranny since that is what I got out of the first one. The 2nd tranny only lasted 45,000 miles. He is checking with Acura to see what they can do.

He said that sometimes they will do a 75/25 or a 50/50 depending on whether I was the initial owner and if I had my service done with them. Well, I'm the 2nd owner and I have a friend, who is a honda tech, do my maintenance (timing belt, etc.)

Called insurance about the tow and they will only cover a portion.

This is not looking good. He did say that if I paid the $3500 it would include the 3 year/30,000 mile warranty. Yeahhh!!

BTW I aked him if he knew about Acurazine and he said he was familiar with it. I told him a lot of the members had paid for the labor and Acura covered the parts. Again, he'll see what they can do.

OK, i just got the call from the dealer. He said Acura would pay 25% and I would be responsible for the remaining 75%.

75% of $3500 = $2625

Here's the kicker: I asked why I would need a new ecu if it was just my transmission. I spoke w/ a transmission shop and they said that if my ecu caused the tranny failure then they should cover all costs. The "advisor" stated to me that sometimes the new tranny's come with the ecu and sometimes they don't come with the ecu. He said that if it didn't come with the ecu then that would save me $700 but he wouldn't know until it arrived???? WTF!!! So, I told the guy why would I do business with you and take a $700 gamble when I could go to a tranny shop and know exactly what I was getting and what I was paying for?

I repeated my story to him about only getting 45,000 miles on this tranny. I repeated the fact to him that others had received the parts and only paid for labor. He said that they quit doing that in September of 2007. He also said they didn't come w/ the 3 yr, 36,000 mile warranty. So I asked him if I could get that deal w/out the warranty and he said no.

He is now going to go back to Acura and ask for more assitance. I probably won't hear anything until tomorrow. At this point I am hoping that I get a 50/50 split with no ecu costs. That would probably get me down under $2000.

3500-700=2800/2=$1400 I think $1400 and the 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty would be reasonable.

Thoughts anyone?

OH, and I'm sorry to totally hijack this thread. Congrats again on making it to 170,000 miles. I wish the OP the best of luck.

Alright, I went back to the dealer just before they closed and talked directly w/ the guy who is conversing with Acura.

Two things:

1. I asked if the ECU was causing the tranny problem and IS that why they were trying to push one on me. I didn't get a new ECU w/ the 1st replacement therefore they "owed" me a new tranny. He said they thought this was the problem early on,"it may have been causing too much torque". But they had gotten away from that idea.

2. I told him that I was aware that there was a "fix" in 06' and there had been less residual problems since. He acknowledged this. I stated my tranny was replaced in March of 05' so it was before they "fixed" the problem.

He said he would go to bat for me with Acura tomorrow and I felt more confident in their approach after speaking with him face to face.

Again, if you get 80,000 miles out of the 1st bad tranny then you should get more than 45,000 miles out of a good replacement transmission.

I'm glad it's Acura though, I wouldn't be having this conversation if I was dealing with most other manufacturers. Gotta love the A!

you wouldn't have this conversation because the transmission most likely wouldn't fail quite so commonly.

I still can't believe you are on your first transmission

That's just crazy.

I sent my $680 tow bill to my insurance and the dealer today. It'd be nice to get about 1/2 of that back.

Ed Voyles does great work. I've had my '01 CLP for a little over 6 years and they have always treated me well. I don't know who you are dealing with, but Kevin and Jason are both are phenomenal. I just had my (don't laugh) 45K service & new front brakes done there and they did a great job. Good luck with the new transmission.

Thanks buddy,

I got everything resolved today. Acura is going to pay for 1/2 the transmission with no ecu. So, it did come out to around $1400. The best part is that they are going to pay half of the tow also...$340! Done deal. I'm still hoping insurance will pay for the other half of the tow

Jake and John @ Ed Voyles have been fun to work with. You just can't act like a geek off the street or else your going to pay $3500. I've been courteous throughout the entire process giving them the benefit of the doubt to make things right. Being knowledgeable about the history of our cars definitely helped me out. I give "props" to Acurazine for that. That is what made the difference.

There is a thin line between being the squeeky wheel that gets greased and acting like an A-Hole that nobody wants to work with.

Tranny number three is on the way

The power steering problem could be as simple as a o-ring. I would replace the o-ring where the pressure hose fits on the pump. On my 01 TL and my CL that o-ring has gone bad and made the pump have a growling sound. There is a TSB about it also.

Just picked it up today. Payment came out at $1250 today and the $340 is being mailed to me.

Noticeably smoother shifting!

I'm stoked and I am going to put the springs/shocks on the car ASAP now, they've been in storage for months.

Then headers and exhaust....I'm going to enjoy these next 30,000 miles
