Low sales on CL Type S?
Low sales on CL Type S?
I read this somewhere on the web. That sales for CL were really low and they might discontinue the CL line all together. They also said TL was selling very well and they might make the TL into a two door or something..not sure...I want to know why sales would be low for such a great car...bang for buck you get your money's worth in a CL...in comparison to other cars....any comments about this? How will this affect the CL for aftermarket parts etc if this should happen?

hahaha...smartass...if I can find the link for it..I'll post it up...it was some automotive site...damn, where did it go? If anyone knows what I'm talking about can you post it up please? much thanks, TKO
Let's see where to begin:
Welcome to last year.
That is called a CL.
No brand and no looks.
What aftermarket parts?
You've been TKO'd!

Yea, and this discussion was had a year ago too, around when the 02-03 models were current. Everyone has answered most of your questions. The CL is a TL with 2 doors. It's the same platform engine, interior. Honda execs have been insinuating it is on it's last legs for a year, they would be stupid to admit it till the latest possible date. Sales peaked in 01 and have gone down from there.
The coupe market is small anyway and the CL suffered from non-distinct styling for this segment to set it apart for the average coupe buyer. Not to mention the more publicized quality issues with the trans, and the offensive dealer service.
I saw over a dozen CLs on the delear lot last month. Only people besides me looking at them were middle aged women and they were driving the automatics.
The TL sales are dropping too, it's an old design in today's fast market, and so is the CL now.

Sorry 'bout the smartass remark, but it was too easy
The RL has lower sales figures then the CL.

I know that Acura probably makes more money on the RL (due to the higher sticker price), but since Acura is planning a redesign of the RL in '07 (RWD w/ a V8??) I don't see why they can't keep the CL in the lineup too.

u know what
i dont think the cl sales are low. i mean the reason why the tl and mdx sell so well is because of the large demand for sedans and suvs. if there was a large demand for sport luxery coupes then the cl will have a significant higher sales rate.
why dosent lexus come out with a 2 door is300?
demand is not high enough
actually if you think about it acura is currently a monopoly over the sport luxery coupe cars!!!!
i think they are doing well.

Lexus is prob scared that it will fall victim like the CL to the 3-Series BMW's. But they have a high end coupe in the SC430.
Acura DOES NOT have a monopoly on luxo coupes. I would say BMW does (sales wise). Don't forget about Audi either. Japanese luxo coupes maybe.
And to the argument that says CL's sales are low because there is not a demand for luxo coupes......I see a ton of 3 series BMW coupes everyday. I also think the G35 coupe will sell very well. The dealerships will have people waiting in line to pay over sticker for one. It's actually nice that Infiniti is coming out with the G35 Coupe. Nissan and Infiniti have been going thru very "ballsy" changes last few years, and I think it's paying off. They will give BMW a little run for their money, but BMW will always win.
It's all in the marketing. I see BMW commercials and ads 10x more than I see Acura commercials. When I do see Acura commercials, I usually see RSX ones. The CL commercials are really bland, people don't remember that shit. --Some guy drives 100,000,000 miles to get lunch because he likes to drive his car--quick shot of the car---acura sign---(CL in very small print). Done.
Same with the styling. I love the way my car looks, but its not distinct. When people see a BMW drive by, they KNOW its a BMW. They don't have to be know cars to tell. When they see a CL drive by they think.........HMMMMM nice looking car. what is it...a Honda?
BMW also gives itself a nice image. The image is of luxury. Didn't skimp on anything, like money was no factor. People like that. They want to buy a car that has that image, because they want everyone to see them that way. The reason I bought my CL-S and Acura's best attribute is VALUE. I wanted the most car i could get for the $$. Most people who buy luxury (near-luxury cars) don't place value high on the totem pole, they just want the best. Most people who want value go with Honda or Toyota. It's kinda like the OBX vs. Comptech thing. I would by OBX because of the value. People who don't care about the coin will get the Comptech because they are SAID to be better.
Sorry I'm rambling.......it's late and I just had to get it off my chest.
Well said Speed King.
I actually forgot about the CL series of commericals until you mentioned it. I guess that the marketing arm of Acura didn't make a big impression on me w/ that commerical (or maybe they did, since I bought a CLS).
One of the things that appealed to me about the CLS was value. I like what I got for the money, and I think I'll like the residual value when I buy another vehicle. I took a beating on my Ford T-bird resale value wise, and that's why I bought my first import. I wanted something that would retain some resale value. I also like the fact that honda/acura has a proven record of vehicle reliabity.
Ford bailed on the coupe market in 98 when they stopped production of the Tbird. I think they pulled the plug on the Tbird SC (supercoupe, 3.8 supercharged V6, 5spd w/ leather) a few years before that (my brother has a 1990 forsale). The coupe market was dying then, as people were buying minivans and suvs.
I think the sport coupe market will pick up as aging babyboomers are looking for something more sporty then the usual suspects (minivans, suvs, 4 door sedans). With other auto makers introducing new coupes (G35C) and others rumored to be introducing coupes (audi and lexus) Acura will need to do somethings to keep (and increase) their peice of the pie in the sport coupe market segment. The CLS 6spd is a nice try, but the marketing department needs to be a little bit more aggressive.
BMW will always be topdog in the market segment. I wanted a 330 but I bought a CLS (price and value). Lexus (and Infiniti) started up after Acura, but for some reason, Acura is perceived to be less of a luxury brand (the "it's just a honda" thing).
Sidemarker: I thought that Lexus was rumored to be coming out w/ a is300 based coupe? Did they kill the idea 'cause of lack of demand ? CL sales aren't that bad in the tight sport coupe segment. Since the CL shares some components w/ some better selling cars (TL and Accord) I think Acura can afford to keep the CL in production. They just need to market it better.

Long Live the CLS!!!!!
Before I bought my CL-S I did research on many cars then It came down to 5 of them. The first test drive was the CL. I loved it instantly, Then It was an M3, Damn it was fast and I loved that 6 speed, but it was small on the inside and I was trying to get out of the small car BS. I have had my civic since 93( With a B16B swap and Venom Nitrous system), yes it was fast but I was tired of the little beats in there Monster DX hondas with fat tips. Then there was the IS300 which really disappointed me. Slow as shit and too small. Finally the Q45. Overall a good car but didn't handle too well. I even tried the Q45T not much of a differnce. I went right back to the Acura dealership and 45 minutes later I was cruisin down Michican Ave(Chi-Town) in my San Marino Red CL-S. Damn I love this car
