Low pitched noise / vibration at idle

Hello all..

I just picked up a 2001 CL Type-S.

There's a very prominent low pitched rumble / vibration when the car is stopped and idling and when the AC compressor engages. It almost sounds/feels like a sub - a very low pitched hum and vibration you can feel in the cabin. I've never heard / felt anything like it in any of my previous cars / Hondas.

Is this noise/vibration "normal" for the CL? I would expect better from a car of this class and level. Other than that, I love the car!

Can anyone comment or shed some light on this?.. It would be most appreciated..

Cheers,
Victor

My car also 'rumbles' in about 1sec intervals at idle when I have the AC on. Don't know if it does it when the AC is off, but it is what it is. I guess I'll worry about it when I give it gas and it doesn't move.

I have the same problem on my 2003 CL-S while idleing. When you step on the gas it goes away. I don't get it all the time. I did mention it to the dealer, but of course they couldn't hear the noise. "Let us know when it gets worse." they said. OK, heres the interesting part...my wife has a 2003 TL-S AND DOES NOT GET THIS NOISE!

Well glad to see I'm not alone with my problem. I've made two service attempts to fix this "mystery noise" and yet the car still makes the same noise! The dealer thought it was the a/c tensioner, so that was replaced, but no improvement in noise reduction. I called Acura USA and they suggested that the noise may be a characteristic of the car. On that note I decided to call the bbb and see if I could get a third party assesment of my problem. I also discovered in my warranty guide, a bbb claim number from the previous owner of the car, so I now think I have a possible lemon case on my hands. Updates will come.

The CL Type S has high flow exhaust.....so it rumbles a bit. I have Comptech mufflers.....which makes is even louder. It also happens whenever the thermostat opens too.

To be honest that sounds like a motor mount to me. The 6 speeds may be a different issue since the mounts are different and there is no torque converter to quell the engine vibration but my 01 CL-s has never done that. On FWD cars that is usually the first sign a motor mount is bad.

Yeah it's the thermostat, and when the fan comes on.

UPDATE

Just got back from the dealer and me going into the shop with the tech and the shop foreman and instructing them to listen with a mechanic's stethoscope, the noise FINALLY diagnosed as a bad AC compressor & clutch assembly. The new parts have been ordered and will be on the car in one week. I'll post the results asap.
