Low budget / High performance Modifications

Anyone know of modifications I can make to my CL-S (AT) that don't cost much but increase HP and power quiet a bit. I'm not really knowledgeable in mechanics. I need some serious opinions.
Thanks

headers dont change the sound and add quite a bit of HP, but unless you go OBX for 300, your payin 1200 for comptech. but you wont be disappointed other than that you can go with a comptech icebox cold air intake which hardly changes the sound but only adds a third of the HP headers do.

oh and if you had jumped in sooner you could've went with a Unichip, which doesnt change the sound at all and adds roughly 10-15hp\tq .. but for 675. but I doubt any are left .. wait a month of two after they come out some members might sell but expect them to sell on the black market for the same price they paid if not more, because it is so rare.

headers... interesting since that's what I had in mind. However, comptech are selling for 1250$ (+ installation, probably 1800). Is OBX reliable? Also, a cold air intake give me how much horsepower more? Will I notice the difference in acceleration? What good brands for the cold air?

AEM is a good brand for CAI and cheap too. There isnt much HP gain from it butthe sound will make it FEEL faster

you can find comptech for a little cheaper, bout 1099 prob and theres no way its 600 for install. my dealer did it for like 250 I think so you can find cheaper at a performance shop. do a search there are tons of threads on header installation and what has been payed.

OBX .. haha you can do a search on this too. I'm a little biased because I have comptech and the quality is unmatched, but I'm not going to turn this into another comptech vs obx thread, because there are dozens. Some have had NO trouble with OBX, others have had so many problems that with the money they've paid to take them off, put them back on again, fix them etc. they could've purchased and installed comptechs. Have had welds crack, flanges warped, and just down right pipes not fitting together. then again a few have had them go on with zero problems .. but never a problem with a set of comptechs that has been posted on this forum (that I can remember)

a cold air intake will probably give in the area of 10-15 peak hp and the same torque. They mostly add more midrange torque, but also add good top end power. You will notice it most in the mid-RPM range and off the line power ... AEM and comptech both make good cold air intakes, but if quietness is a priority for you, comptech is the way to go. AEM is just plain loud, but sounds mean.

I could've sworn I saw a dyno around here somewhere one time for an icebox getting 12 peak hp .....I could be wrong.

ok but with headers and CAI, I'll really see a big difference in acceleration and power?

N20. 75hp gain. $600 for a kit. $20-30 to fill bottle.

This one mod alone will be a lot more noticable than Headers/Intake...

yes, you will feel a big difference /w a 75 shot.

In the summer your OK. But once it gets colder you need $200 in additional parts. Bottle warmer for sure. Without the bottle warmer the pressure in the tank will not be correct in the winter.

nitrous won't be my choice though. that's just simply dumb and illegal where I live anyways. I want something reliable and stable.

Yes with headers and intake you will notice a huge difference over stock, I can vouch for that.

Illegal? dumb? whats dumb about it? same concept as sticking a turbo/supercharger on your car. It's just a hell of a lot less plumbing.

Many people do not understand it, or have serious misconceptions about it. You appear to be one of those people.

To make more power you need to add more fuel/air. N20 add the air, then the FPR makes up for the fuel. (on the dry system I posed) Just like a SC/TURBO.

Plenty of folks in CL(s) running 75 shot /w no problems.... guess they are dumb

Intake and headers are noticable but it's not night and day.

Don't ask for things then tell people the response is dumb. not very nice is it?

not illegal in Jersey as long as you can't reach the opening nozzle on the bottle from the drivers seat. and I think you have to have a permit.

What's your budget?

Best bank for buck are headers. The obx's are somewhat reliable. Only a few problems have come up. I'd chance a set if I had an auto. Ebay has a set of Comptechs real cheap. Well...cheaper then most anywhere for new ones.

Intake would be next. The only real difference between the Icebox & AEM is the sound. The AEM has more of a growl in vtec. The ice box is alot quiter.

Next would be better tires.

Your being very generous with that comment
Do a search, I'd say there were more than a few problems with obx's.

The major difference between the icebox and AEM is certainly the sound, but I wouldn't say its the only real one. Quality and design play a big part .. I feel the comptech is built a little better and a little more thought out. you definetly see what you payed for when you get the Icebox as far as build quality and parts go, as opposed to the AEM aluminum pipe, mount, filter, hose clamps and license plate frame.

Oh and if your really addicted to the AEM scream in VTEC, swap out your foam Uni filter in the icebox for the K&N cone filter. I did this and definetly makes the VTEC band very AEM-like, but retains the icebox quietness below vtec.

agree on better tires too

I have been in MANY cl's.

NOTHING can touch the TOYO T1-S for this car...

I ve had them for 2000 miles after my Nitto 555 extremes for 35k

I am an idiot for not buying the good tires in the first place

I wouldn't say that ....

has anyone ever tried the BFG T\A KDW-2's? Besides having one of the meanest street tire tread patterns I've ever seen .... their ratings are unbelievable, a friend who has them on an S4 swears by them, no matter where I go I hear good things about them .. and I was recently at the SEMA show in Atlantic City where BFG had a tire challenge going on with an STi outfitted with these tires, and a friend who got to drive it said they were simply amazing .... I think these will be my next summer tires.
