Looking to buy a '01 CL-S

Hello all,

New to the forum here. I've always had Honda/Acura in the past. And last year i bought a Lexus IS300. I recently sold it and am looking for a 01 CL-S. But i've seen so many people here with Transmission problem. So i wanted to see how many out there thinks this is still a good idea to buy the 01 CL-S. Have they corrected the problem? I see that some people are on their 3rd and 4th. How does it help if they keep putting a defective transmission in there? Just wanted to get more infor before buying the car.

Thanks,

-D

Wow what’s with the recent explosion of perspective CL buyers?? Not that that’s a bad thing however. Maybe this will offset all the people going to the evil G.

bucd, Acura has said that all the new transmissions that are going in have been "fixed." However some people have reported having problems even with those transmissions in there. All 2001, 2002 and early 2003 model CL's are covered until 100k miles regarding the transmission.

Keep in mind that some people haven't ever experienced any problems in their CL's at all. This board can make it seem that the transmission problem is bigger then it really is. Don't let it sway your decision. If you find a nice CL for a good price, get it.

Thanks bro,

I actually put some money down on a 2002 TL-S when i was looking for a car last year. When i went to pick it up at an Acura Dealership, i saw that they had a 2001 IS300. So i thought i would drive that and see if i like it. And for some reason i got it, i think it was because of the way it looked. I don't know, but anyhow. Thanks for the info, it does make you question Acura after reading all those post about problems with the transmission.

I'm looking at a 01 with 62k miles and it has the transmission replaced. It's for $17,820.

That's a pretty good price i would say....right?

It seams to me that cars that have had the trans replaced are more suceptable to needing another tranny down the line. I would lean more to finding one with 62K miles that has not had the tranny replaced than to one that has. At any rate you need to talk them down to 15K or less simply because the tranny has been replaced.

I would go with the '03 CLS 6sp... if you like driving stick... much better car than the auto - power and handling... I had an '01 CLS and traded it in for an '03 CLS 6p... I'm much happier with the 6sp... and besides, the 6sp is better suited for mods...

My guess is because you can get them for under $20g's now. Sad to think the value of the car dropped 10,000 in 3 years... but I guess that is typical.

If I were you I would lean towards a CLS that has not had the trans replaced. Indeed the board can make you think that almost everyone has had their trans replaced, as chaptorial stated that many have not had any problems with theirs. If ya like it buy it.

Yeah thats what i figured too. Its not too good for those who already have CL's but for those who want them now their sitting pretty.

For a 2001 with 62k that’s a pretty good deal. Are you buying it from an Acura dealership? Also does it have Navi? Not that it matters however cuz a Navi in the used car market doesn't command that much of a price increase. Just curious..

I got my '02 CLS for $21,000 back in may. 35k miles... high mileage for an '02 but then again.....

62k is alot more for just another year... I don't know if a 3,000 savings is worth 30k miles.

Shop around, you can find awesome deals right now.

Yeah, this is from an Acura dealership.

They also have a black one for $19k with 44k miles. I might look into that one. The silver ones does have springs installed though. Not that is a big deal. But it's something extra.

Thanks to all the replies.

Ok guys.

Looks like i'm picking up the car tomorrow. It's a silver 01 CL-S with 62k miles. It's from an Acura dearlership and from the guy told me, this one is still on it's first tranny. He told me the other one was replaced, got it messed up. Sticker price on this one was for $19,990. But i was able to get him down to $16,400. So it looks good. I was looking at the car, and it looks like it's been dropped so i took a look under the wheel well, and it's got some comptech springs. So that was cool.

So for those who knows a little bit more about these. Since this one has not gotten the tranny replaced at 62k miles, is that a good sign?

thanks,

-D

WEEEEllll,

I wouldn't necesarily say that seeing the Comtech's is a good thing. That would sure make me start poking around to see what else had been done (and maybe undone).....

Maybe someone wanted to put the car back to semi-stock - all except the springs? (cuz that's a hassle).....

I'd be just a little careful about this one....

Pete

Congrats on your new car. I (we) think you'll really enjoy it!

If I may ask, why drop the IS300? Was it a good car? Anything you didn't like about it?
