Long trip in the CL for the upcoming holidays?

Just curious if anyone is taking a long road trip in the CL for the upcoming holidays? I am taking the CL to Michigan from Illinois for the first time for Thanksgiving. Trip is going to be about 6 hours and got the wife and two kids in the car. Should be fun and comfy. Our other car that we usually take on longer trips is an 07 Infiniti FX35 and that thing is not comfy on long trips. The seats are hard and the suspension is rough. So I am looking forward to this trip and hopefully the MPG gods will be kind to me...

that's not a long trip. I drive from MN to Michigan usually 2x a year 735 miles 12 hours each way with an average speed of 72. Minus 35mins for gas up. 30 mpg with a CL-S.

Haha...nice...sounds like fun. But "long" could be different for everyone. My average commute is about 45 min each way for work...so a 6 hour drive is considered long. But I am hoping to get about 30mpg's too. Just got the tranny fluid changed and an oil change. I also added in the "fuel system" cleaner stuff...not sure if that will help on the MPG or not. But we will see.

Wow, you sure are packing the cl to the limit with passengers. Good luck and be safe, dont forget to also check your tire pressure for added mpg's.

4 or 5 trips from south FL to NYC & back. 18 hours straight drives each way only stopping for gas. Almost 3K miles round trip.
I got mostly 28-29mpg but one trip I got 32. Must have been a tail wind.

Hah, just noticed your sig. You have 1 of 16 in that combo. Nice! Enjoy the trip! You should easily get 30 mpg if your wife is as paranoid as mine about "accelerating"...

Yup...trying to confirm which seq I have from 1-15 but from the list that I have seen on this forum, I believe I have the first one of 15 according to my VIN. But who knows....The list could have been typed up. It does not matter really...just going to visit some family and enjoy the holidays. Hope there is no snow coming our way...so far, it looks mild but cold.

The CL is a great cruiser. Drove all day in it before and another time, I took a 4 hour, 200 mile trip and got the CL to get 37.8 MPG the whole way. Only used a little over 5 gallons. Of course I never passed the speed limit of 65 though

I agree the CL is a nice cruiser I drove from DC to SoCal about 2800 miles in a hurried 2 1/2 days I wish I had more time to enjoy it.

The CL does make a good long distance cruiser. Ive gone on a few trips with it. VA to NY numerous times, VA to Tenn, VA down to Charlotte a few times. Im heading out to CA tomorrow but sadly the CL wont be joining me. I was supposed to go to the AZine meet in Kansas City this past summer but couldnt go due to health issues. I will be there next year.

My latest road trip was up to NY. On the way up I used 3/4 of a tank in about 390 miles. I filled up in Jersey right before the Outerbridge Crossing, used about 1/4 of that tank in NY over the weekend, then drove all the way back to Richmond and still had almost 2 gallons left. My personal best was 32mpg with the 3.6l coming back from Tenn with the a/c on and doing ~80 most of the way.

Only 30mpg? Automatic? I average at least 34 doing that trip and have gotten as high as 37mpg heading to the upper P.

The CL is indeed a great cruise. I drove for 12 hours straight with the cruise set to nearly 80 for the majority of the trip as well as the AC blasting and averaged 28.5 mpg. That's miles traveled / gallons in. Pretty happy with that.

Have fun and be safe. I drove my CLS6 back from Long Island to Louisville, KY when I bought her. Talk about getting to know your car on the fly. I will probably drive her to the Keys on my honeymoon around late June this coming year. I love road trips in my baby, just hate piling the miles on her.

Yo! This thread made my year! Headed out west in the Type-S in two weeks...was a little worried, but after seeing this, looks like things will be all gravy. Any tips besides obvious maint'c?

I got 35.4 from Calgary to Edmonton with cruise set at 120 the entire way, I could see getting 36-37 if I had cruise set lower.

See below. Stayed under 60 most of the time and followed big rigs, all freeway.

My only proof now:

I wish I had saved the receipt or at least taken a pic of it.

My best half tank:

Sadly traffic in Jersey and NY killed the rest of it. I think I still got about 30mpg on that trip though. That was with the 3.6l @80 most of the way with the a/c on.

that's pretty insane... so u drove that far then filled up the tank then converted it?

there are 2 different mpg calculations as well (us: which is harder to achieve) and imperial gallons (which is a easier)

Yea, but on average, I only get ~220-240miles on the first half tank. Ill need to find the receipts again, but I used the rest of that tank in NY and it still got me back into Jersey so I could save 20 cents/gallon on the fill up.

unless you fill the tank up and get a reciept for the exact amount of fuel uve burned for the mileage uve driven then you're calculations are false.

a gas gauge is never accurate. so for any of you who look at the gas gauge and think it's accurate enough to get calculate your mpg you are sadly mistaken.

I am supercharged and I average between 420-430 miles per tankfull. That is about 27.5 to 28.6 mpg. CL-S is a great cruiser on the Hwy.

I have gas receipts from day one proving my gas mileage. I am missing four, but I have the numbers written down. Yes, I am a nerd. My calculation method is always amount of fuel used / miles driven.

I guess I am old school, I hate rushing and chances are when you rush in a car is when you get the ticket. Only time I really have to accelerate in my car is when merging or passing, that is about it. I have grown out of the speeding phase.

Traffic usually runs around 70 here. You'll occasionally get asshole out-of-staters on I95 sitting in the left lane doing 55 in a 65 zone. Personally, I dont care if youre only doing 5 over, just keep it to the middle or right lane. Dont clog up the passing lane.

I filled up before leaving the city, drove to Edmonton at 130, not the 120 I said in my post (not sure how to edit that), did about 50km within the city, filled up again then came home and filled up once back in Calgary. Totaled around 660km and put in 44.xx liters between the two fill ups. I think if I had cruise at 110 or 120 I could have probably saved another liter or two probably.

Thats exactly how I calculate my MPGs. Fill up full, drive, fill up fill again, divide miles driven by amount of gas used between the 2 full tanks.

Your talking to him. If it yields over 30 MPG on the freeway and your not in a rush to get where your going, why not? With gas at 4.49 for premium, I make up for it. In fact, they should lower the speed limit back to 50 like it was in the 70's during the oil crisis. I bet fewer people would complain about the cost of gas.

We also have our calculations posted in the bottom of the Garage section under our cars: https://acurazine.com/forums/garage....showmpgsummary
