Load rating?

Is there a tire in a 225/40/18 size that meets or exceeds the load rating of the stock Michelins?

XL rating in a 225/40-18 is 92 and that's 1 shy of 93.

93 is the load rating for the CL-S

91 is the load rating for the CL

Look for the load rating chart

93 --> 1433 lbs
91 --> 1356 lbs

I've generally considered 91, 92, 93 to be OK. However, just about anyone who installs tires and cares about liability will want to put a tire on the car that is equal to or greater than the factory spec.

OTOH, people do all kinds of crazy shit to their cars, and who am I to judge.

If you ever have a problem with a car's suspension, etc. and it has ANYTHING to do with the tires and they are not rated to the factory spec (V min speed rating, 93 load rating min), you might be picking up some or all of the bill -- and letting Acura off the hook.

IMHO, if I had a fixation on a 225/40-18, and I could only get it in an XL rating, I'd put it on in the 92 XL rating and just avoid filling the car up with Sumo wrestlers.

BTW, you realize that some of this rationalizing leads to people feeling that it’s just “wonderful” to put 88 SL rated tires on their cars and that’s getting kind of scary.

YMMV

exactly....I was looking at the BF G-force KDW2, beautiful tires with good reviews, but looking at the specs it has a low load rating of 88....200lbs less each tire, not something I want to consider when I am going into a turn with the car loaded.....I decided to go with the Yoko Parada Spec II's with its extra load capacity...great tire!!

So let me toss in a stupid question. The diff between the rating on the CL to the CL-S, is the the car or the wheels?

So I have a CL but I have CL-S wheels on it, do I need a 93 or 91 load rating???????

The highest load rating I found so far in a 225/40/18 is Nitto NT 555, load rating of 1389 vs. 1433 for stock. Anyone had these before, how are they?

Check this out:

Any of the tires on the following tire rack page with an XL in the description should be a 92 load rated tire (Continental ContiSportContact 2, Pilot Sport PS2, PZero Nero, PZero Rosso):

And www.toyo.com

225/40ZR18 92WRD in A Toyo T1S

And others...
