Lightning Run...

Heading into the office the other day I was stopped at a light next to a new Lightning (dealer tags and was probably heading to the Ford dealer one mile up the road).

He was already at the light when I pulled up. I wasn't expecting anything but was on guard. The light turned green and I pulled out at a about 30% throttle. I then see him pulled forward hard so I went WOT which was a mistake. I spun the rest of first, grabbed second and spun as I dropped to his rear bumper. I grabbed third and now had traction. I ran 3rd up and went on by shutting down at about 85 MPH with him at my rear bumper.

Maybe I need to start off in 2nd. :o

I'm sure we'll hear from them. But it does help to also have an Eaton product under the hood of the CL-S.

Most likely an '04 but could have been an left over '03 as it did have dealer tags. My guess is that it was someone who works at the dealer up the road.

I'm running 235/45/17 AVS ES100's; they are pretty sticky. Not much more I can do there and be able to take turns at a decent clip.

Really? I was thinking it was a late 90's model. Really nice kill if you beat a new one.

Good point, it was last years body style with the clear rear lenses. So I assume a '01 or '02. Regardless, the one with the M112 Eaton blower and nearly 400HP.

Edit: It would have had to of been an '01 or '02 as I just looked up that the cleared lens became available in '01.

good kill steve

and a for the work done on your car.

the lightning could have been from 01-04 as they are all the same.

stock there 380horse and pushing 4700 pounds.

the biggest problem is a lot of people can't drive them
but watch out as they can be a beast as i was able to hit 13.4 @ 102 stock.

a stock type S wont stand a chance, or will one with headers intake or pulley's. as my wife smoked my cl's ass everytime.

only a cl with NOS, Turbo or supercharge and allmotors car will give a lightning a good race.

so i think steve thread should have been called

supercharged Cl hands stock lightning his ass.

moded Vs moded

add a chip and a pulley on the lightning for $600 and steve will be seeing tail lights by the buslenghts.

I totally agree with that one.

It was rubbing me the wrong way when people were saying a CLS stands no chance against any lightning any day(not you).

how about those kdw tires by bridgestone i believe, they are street legal and very sticky, u can launch your car at 3k and they will still stick

Very true... I should be able to trap at 106+ which in this case the start from a roll was to my benefit (albeit I still had no traction). The results were about what I would expect against a stock Lightning.

It would be interesting to run against a moddified one from a roll. I suspect that from a 60MPH roll I would still loose but not as bad as from a stop. When the IC is complete along with tuning the e-Manage I should be trapping at 110+ which should give me a better chance against a modded Lightning. What do they trap with a pulley and chip??

Are you refering to the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW Tires?? They are street tires from what I understand and would not provide any noticeable gain in grip over what I have.

Even if I went with BFGoodrich Comp T/A Drag Radial Tires I would still be somewhat limited on the street but couldn't come close to launching at 3k revs. I need to get wheel hop under control...

again it depend on the driver, installing the chip seems to wake these engines up so traction becomes and issue,

a chip and #4 pulley= 13.08-13.2 area 104-106
a chip and #6 pulley= 12.9-13.1 area 105-108

these are on the stock F1's

going to a et street radail makes a big differance, most guys tend to go the #4 pulley as mods are still a warranty issue in the USA,

as for a roll you'll want to take them between 20-35 mph,
before i switch the tires i would lite the tires up at that speed and made a habit of running at roll from 40mph only,

when i just had my chip and #6 pully in i raced my buddies stock lightning from a 55/95 km roll by the time i had hit 70/120km i had made roughly a 7 length lead

Those traps look like I should be good competition from a roll. However, I doubt my skills at launching this vehicle are honed enough to provide even an adequate Lightning driver something to worry about from a stop.

Traction is still a problem when going from 20 - 35 MPH. Even hitting the throttle at 50 MPH in 2nd gear will break the tires loose. To really show I would need to be in 3rd and go from about 50MPH.

When done with the IC and tuning my fear is that I will trap in the 111 - 112 range but with ET's in the 13.5 range... :o
