License Plates...

I was wondering if it is legal to bend your license plate? I have a 97 CL and I want to bend the top and bottom of the plate back so it will fit in the lower grill area, that way I don't have to use the front bumper holder. I did have it off for like 6 months but when I got pulled over for speeding the cop frowned on it not being there so I don't want to take the chance. I thought I saw a pic on here of someone else who had done it but basically I want to know if I can bend the plate.

Thanks

Melanie

I think there was a Supreme Court law or decision made on this subject but i can't remember any details.

But I believe you can do anything you want to your licence plate so long as you don't cover any of the actual license numbers.

And something as small as bending it to fit your car shouldnt make any difference, but i would suggest getting the front frame holder. A bare plate just looks nasty IMO.

Myself and another member I know that live here in Oregon, have our plates bent to curve with the front bumper. He has a 01 I got a 03. I have yet to be pulled over in the 6 months that it has been bent.

Good deal, I honestly didn't think I'd get any responses, thanks guys - I have the plate holder right now and I just don't like the way it looks - And I have Yankees personalized plates and the NEW YORK is on the top and wouldn't be visable but I think I'll take my chances

You should be able to bend it.............You did pay for it

I know lots of people with pickups that had to bend it to fit on the rear bumper

I'm not sure any cop would care if you bent the plate. Kind of a gray area. As long as it's visible and not bent so much that's it's completely distorted I would say that your fine. You always have the rear as proof.

I think what will determine whether you can deform the license plate really depends upon your state's laws. It can be considered a "visibility" issue. Some states allow tinted covers, some don't. My front plate is covered on the top and bottom so you can't read the state, only displaying the middle which has the numbers behind a tinted cover, and have had no problems thus far (in Washington, DC). When I drive out of state, they can't do anything (sometimes if I drive for long trips, I'll just remove the plate entirely). I would recommend you check out your municipal regulations, but am of the belief that it technically would be illegal, since like Pimpin White said, it is state property. But than again, any of you see those Penny Souvenier presses that mashes pennies into designs and shapes????? Hmmmmmmmmmm............
