Let's Brainstorm A Little
Let's Brainstorm A Little
I was going to try and take care of this without asking however, I decided I'll take some pre-repair advice before I touch it.
My driver's seatbelt...
For awhile now I've noticed the seatbelt latch has been making this creaking sound. It's really annoying. Most of the time when I am by myself I can't hear it because the stereo is too loud. On the other hand, when I have someone else in the car with me and the music is turned down, the noise from the seatbelt latch is somewhat annoying and embarrasing. It only does this noise when I go over some bumps, move in the seat, or breath. All in all, it's basically unavoidable and it's starting to drive me nuts.
Now... I understand Honda has a lifetime warranty on seatbelts but... I don't really want to take it to the dealer because 1.) I doubt they'll warranty a seatbelt because it's "making creaking sounds"; 2.) I hate going to the dealership because customer service out here sucks; And 3.) Because everytime I take my car to a dealer out here they screw something else up on the car in the process. :shakehead
Has anyone had this problem and what did you do about it? Anyone have any ideas? Can I take the latch apart and maybe grease the internals? I've been pretty brave about doing things on this car myself but we're talking a saftey issue in this case. I've never taken a seatbelt apart before so I don't know what to expect.
Thanks for the help guys (and girls)!

It's a safety device, let the dealer replace it. I think they have to replace any fault with a seat belt. I'm annoyed at my seat belt cause when unbuckled it doesn't roll back in all the way much of the time. The roller seems weak.

EDIT: Do you think the internals of that latch would really be all that complicated?

Humm, I wonder what it would cost to just buy a new latch...

They all creak. It's not a safety issue.
I found this fix on the TL board.

The squeak is caused by a metal tension washer digging into the nylon washer where the seat bolt passes through the buckle mounting arm. Remove the seat by undoing the 4 bolts that hold it to the floor, then remove the bolt holding the seat belt buckle arm to the seat frame. You will see a thin metal washer with a wavy shape to it. Discard this washer and reattach the arm to the seat. The squeak will be gone for good. The washer serves little purpose other that to supposedly hold the buckle arm upright when the belt is unfastened, but there are stops that prevent the arm from travelling up or down more than a few inches in either direction so the arm cannot fall down out of the way in between the seat and center console regardless of the silly washer. And if you tighten the seat bolt pretty hard, you'll see that the buckle arm wont move at all, so tighten fully, then take off just a little tension so it moves ever so much up or down and you will be all set. Did this 60k miles ago on my TL and have had no noise since.
Spraying WD40 will only silence it temporarily.
If i can find the ones I removed from both front seat belts I will upload a pic of what it looks like, but you cant miss it once you remove the seat arm bolt. One word of note here, dont waste time trying to remove the bolt while the seat is in the car. Because of where its located, its nearly impossible to get any wrench on it while the seat is in place. It will take you under 2 minutes to remove the 4 seat bolts and you dont even have to take the seat out of the car. Just turn it enough sideways to get a socket on it.

Um that's doing that for a reason.
What's more annoying? Getting hit with an airbag in a frontal impact and not sitting properly in the seat. An airbag can kill you if you aren't seated properly.
Don't believe me? Airbags Kill
i hear a creaking too when my weight shifts within my seat. but i don't quite think it's my satbelt. i'm almost sure it's the seat. does anyone else's seat creak? it's about time to take my seats out and clean and maybe grease anyhow.
keep us posted on your progress, Chris.

FYI. If you do this work yourself, be careful. There is a sensor in the seatbelt buckle that works with the SRS system. My SRS light recently came on and stayed on. I took it to the dealer and the sensor in the buckle had gone bad. They replaced it and the light is now off.
Guys, does anyone know if I pull out the seat, will the SRS light need to be reset or anything once I put everything back in? The reason I ask is that last weekend I was helping my brother install sat. radio in his Murano and the same thing happened. It came on immediately since we had to turn the ignition on with the seat out. Once everything was back together, we had to reset it using the service manual procedure. I was thinking of tackling this today since I don't have much going on. If someone has done this, please let me know ASAP. Thanks!
i'm pretty sure that seatbelts can't be shipped to you residentially.
if you do end up setting the SRS light off, just reset the ecu since you know you set it off and know theres nothing wrong.

seatbelt
I had a problem were the seatbelt not retracting back. Took it to the dealer and they replaced it for free.
I looked up the price for replacement seatbeat and it was almost $200. My dealer takes care of me even though I'm on the 4th tranny.
Look at my reciept
