Legend and RL

I recently left my job, so I need to reduce expenses, which means selling my CL-S and getting something that won't run me $600 a month. I'm lookin at a 94-95 Legend, or a high mileage 96-97 RL (something in the $10-12K price range). Anyway, do any of you have any experience with either of these cars? What are some problems I should look out for with these (ie. like the tranny issue with the CL/TL)? You're input is greatly apreciated.

the rl will be noticeably slower than ur cl-s and wont handle as well...however, if u can live w/those tradeoffs, get one b/c they are uber-reliable and are actually built in japan unlike the cl-s..expect them to last a long time and the quality of the car is very good as well..

the RL and Legend 4-door were more built for luxo. than sport, and since the RL has more luxo. features than the legend, i say go for the RL

You should look for a Legend Coupe which is the CLS's granddaddy. They can be had right in the price range you are looking at. Try and get a Type II (Stamped on the intake manifold) which has 230hp compared to just 200hp with the other motor.

Things to look for....
>90k has the timing belt been done?
Check brake master cyl...
Check radiator top for leaks....
Ask about the repair history on the car...

If you find one PM me and I can help you with some of the frequently asked questions.

RL's are great cars, but a significant change from the CL. Also, I don't know that the 96-97 prices are that low on a RL actually worth owning.

I had a 96 3.5RL before the cl...lemme tell you...nothing rode smoother than that fucking car!!!Quiet as could be....NO RATTLES!!!!!. Also good performance from such a heavy car...alot of body roll though so I bought the Comptech sway bars...had 18" rims on it...handled good then...but still smooth as hell ride. Quite a gas guzzler but thats because before that i had like 3 4cyl's in a row and was getting used to the high gas mileage. Otherwise...the car is built like a tank...we almost never have anything go wrong w/ them at our shop...you will be happy...TRUST ME

my cousin has a legen coupe type 2 and it sreally nice. It has like 180k miles and it still pulls strong. In terms of quality and cool features i would say its better then the CL. And in terms of performance i would say that the legend is just as fast as a CL with better handling stock wise.

Yep, w/ the 6spd they are hard to find (but they are out there). Still hold their values pretty well too (better then comparable legends w/o the 6psd). Probably in the 10-15K range in real nice/lower mile condition.

I'm hoping that after the initial depreciation on the CLS 6spd, the CLS6 will hold it's value better then an auto due to it's rarity (like the legend 6spd).

Legend 6 speed all the way!! Since you are getting a used car anyway, why not go for the Classic!

Thanks for al your input, some good stuff. I test drove a 94 Legend GS sedan, real nice had some cosmetic damge, but it still looks sweet, better than the CL IMHO. Had 143K on it, and shifted real hard from 1st to 2nd, but I hear that is normal. I'm gonna test some RL's today, with over 100K. I'm going on a road trip from AZ to NC later this month, so I have to make sure to get a ride that will make it. While the RL doesn't look as sweet on the outside, the interior is so plush, except for performance I feel like that is a step up from the CL-s. Dunno yet, got some deciding to do.

I would love to find a 6 spd, just real hard to find. Has anyone bought a car on EBAY? If so how was your experience, and how long does it take to ship a car across the country, and are the shipping companies reliable?

I bought my 2001 S2000 from Washington DC, and I live in Oregon. It took 4 days to ship, and cost me $1200.00 including insurance. It was pretty reliable.

I'd go with a Legend because you wanna talk about a fun car. My buddy in High school had one of the 1st 6 speed Legends we'd burn up the road with that thing . I thought for sure we'd do motor damage to it(like 6-7 grand revving it) it kept on coming back for more. Never used a drop of oil or anything went wrong with it(i know of). I haven't talked to this kid in awhile but i haven't heard anything about him selling it. but those Legends were bulletproof i think

Seems like you want a 4 door, but I had 2 Legend Coupes (88 and 95) and they are still my favorite cars. Getting a low mileage legend is a challenge. I like the Legend sedan too, but the coupe is a real stand out in my opinion.
I'd go for the RL if you want a 4 door, if only because it's newer and less repairs needed. good luck.
Forget about getting a 6-speed (94-95) Legend Coupe without high miles, don't exist anymore.

my familyhas a 93 legend adn a 2001 RL...we all prefer the legend. The RL is way too soft for even a luxo car. It's a nice car, but it feels so unstable. The legend feels like a sports car compred to the RL. Good power, super smooth and reliable.

I think I got pretty luck with this one. Aside from some minor wear on the leather seats, the interior is perfect. Only had 85K on it.

RL shares 40% of the old Legends parts so it's not really a huge step up. THe Legend is a Legend, I'd get that instead.
