Cool Legend Caliper Conversion

Alright so I didn't want to post until I started on this mod. I got my caliper in last week and have been waiting for a day where I could have time to prep and paint them properly.

Legend Calipers (referb)

I have just finished sanding, and taping it all off. Results to come soon. Wish me luck!

Well it was a long day, but they are painted. Here is some progress on the paint. Its too dark to take a decent picture so i'll get one up tom when they are dry. And then some before and afters of them on!

Materials:

Prepped (sanded, cleaned, and taped off)

Mini paint booth in the garage. Don't want overspray on the car!

Haha, so violent! I got them from my buddy at Advanced Auto. Saved me some $$! Plus I can trade the stock ones in for the core charge! After I do that they will have cost me about $60 each

But there is a website you can get them from for like 60-80 a piece. There was a thread a lil while ago about it. I'll look for the link for ya.

You can get the Legend Calipers here for a decent price.

I got my NSX calipers at Rockauto for like $200 shipped w/o core returns.
I belive they will give me $60 back for MY core's but I think I might just hold on to them and put them back on when I sell me car and sell theese NSX calipers buy who know's?

Does anyone know if I can use the brackets that came w/da NSX calipers cuz I remember reading you do use the CL brackets but I wanna use the NSX brackets they look alot less rusty then mine are!

I put on my legend calipers about a year ago... there is a definite difference. The calipers will provide a firmer wider grip on the rotor. It will make a slightly better pedal feel. It will stop the car better. I don't feel like I need to apply the brakes as soon as I used to in order to come to a smooth stop.

CL stock calipers were horrible because the car wouldn't stop as soon as I wanted it to and I would have to tap the brake a couple times to make it stop b/c the pedal felt so soft. The new legend calipers make the car stop with one application. nice and firm over stock. They are no 4 -piston race calipers but they make daily driving a lot more pleasant.

Interesting. I have had no issues with my stock brakes save for the normal issue of rotor warpage. Do the Legend/NSX calipers address this issue?

I dont see how, you are using the same size rotor, so if the rotor is prone to warpage from the stock caliper, it will warp on the Legend/NSX caliper.

I read somewhere that with the daul piston calipers there is more area pressing down on the pad and more area for heat to dissapte through, so the nsx/legend calipers will take more heat AWAY from the rotors..
Just what i read somewhere, but who know..
I had like 3 sets of different solid rotors warp on me in less then a year so i got NSX calipers waiting to go on my car after the trans gets rebuilt!

Thats cause i didn't order mine from this site. I just provided the link for those that wanted to get a good deal. Just make sure they are the Dual Piston Calipers from the 95 Legend LS. I think it was the coupe. Click on more info to see pictures and verify its a dual piston, not the single.

I couldn't agree more. took her for a road test after I had them in. So much better. Pedal is actually a little softer than before after we bled the system but man so much less pushing and she comes to a nice smooth stop. but when i got on the brakes, she bit hard!

Yes they do. With the dual piston, you have more even pressure across the pad so it won't flex unevenly like it does with the single piston pushing into the middle. Better wear on the pad and rotor, so more even heat/pressure distribution means less warping and better stopping!

Lookin SWEET! But how is the REAL test?
Honestly is there really a difference if so how much difference?
From a scale of 1-10 with the stock CL brakes being a 3 how is it now?

If the stock CL brakes are a 3 than these are easily an 8. I mean you can't NOT feel the difference.

Here is a break-down for ya (1-10 scale):

Pedal pressure needed for smooth stop:
Stock: 5 (a lot needed)
Legend: 3 (little needed)

Pedal stiffness through braking (how much the pedal fluctuates as you push it down further)
Stock: 4-5
Legend: 8

Brake response when almost locking up from 45-50 roll
Stock: 5-6
Legend: 8-9

Hope this helps. The brakes just feel better and smoother all the way through braking. Doesn't take as much effort either.

How are the calipers taking the heat away? They apply the force to the pads. The pads cause friction on the rotors = heat. The rotors are getting the brunt of the heat, and having an 11.8" rotor on a 3500lb car is the main reason they warp. The calipers are great, no doubt. But if your still running the stock rotors, you will still warp them over time. Aftermarket rotors may slow down the warpage, but there is still the chance because of the size.

Im not knocking this upgrade as its great for the money. But the rotor still is undersized for the car.

Not having the bolts of the rotors torqued to the same number also contributes to warping I think.

Agreed. Lacking for a "Sports Coupe"...

Yea. I see alot of people wrenching on the lug nuts until they cant go any more. They are supposed to be tightened to 80ft-lbs in a star pattern. Then retorque after 25 miles of driving (just once).

I just got them re-torqued yesterday. Drove out to Glenview from my house (almost Gurnee) and did some good highway stopping in traffic on the way back. Now that is how our brakes should feel! Literally night and day difference from the stock ones. I couldn't be happier with this upgrade.
