If that is all you can affored right now I would say go for it, the reason it is so cheap is b/c at the end of this month it wil be illegal to sell radar detectors with VG-2 protection, so retailers have been clearing out what they have. The coverage won't be the same as the previously mentioned models but it's better than nothing.

VG-2 protection illegal? The question is, is it any good and does it work. I've got enough illegal things in my car to have the pigs take their eyes off the dector and on other items. Liek whats a dead hooker doing in my trunk. But isn't this VG-2 a dector and not a blocker? If it does what is says then FK yea I'll get it.

renegade, do you think that this is one of those things that you need to skimp on in the budget department. its not a toy or something frivilous, its a serious piece of equipment that affects how confident you are on the road. dont go cheap. get an escort 8500 or a v1. comon man, dont waste 30 bucks

No one in America needs VG2 protection excepts radar detector owners who are using radar detectors illegally.

Illegal to sell a radar detector with VG2 after this month? Not exactly; that's not what the law says.

Ok, VG-2 is a technology that lets cops see if you have a radar detector, if you have protection then they don't know you have one unless they see it in your car. Even in states where radar detectors are legal cops use VG-2 b/c they like nailing people w/detectors.

As far as it being illegal to sell the VG-2 proctected units...... I work for RadioShack, and we have sold off all our radar detectors at a fraction of their original cost b/c of this law the FCC passed.

Yup, bought one for my son as a Christmas gift. It's not a V1 but it was only $20 (NOT a typo).

What it has is a VG-2 detector - It doesn't merely protect itself from VG-2 but warns that police with VG-2 are nearby.

So, Radio Shack is doing the clearing out, huh? The two near me don't have ANYTHING marked down and are not aware of the law... maybe they don't know something :P

Oh yeah, all the cops in Kansas have VG-2, they spend hours of training on them and they bought a dozen units at $5,000 apiece so they can catch more speeders using radar detectors.

No way dude, the only LEOs who would buy them are the departments that need them, not those who would enjoy using them or enhance their speed-catching capabilities, which it won't anyway. New York, Illinois, and of course Virginia. The list is [IMG]here[/IMG] http://users.rcn.com/glhs87/radar101.html.

Since when does the FCC pass laws, I thought only Congress can pass a law? Perhaps the FCC is [re]writing a regulation and enforcing compliance. No big deal...but what is a big deal is that this is an UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE of an FCC regulation aimed at something else (excessive pollution)...the FCC could care less about VG-2 and the cat and mouse game between the cops.

And don't let Radio Shack's actions skew your thinking. It is not a direct indication of what is really happening...it's only a business decision.

"It is illegal to sell a VG-2 protected units after [date]....." that is a misleading statement and should be said instead "The FCC has passed regulations that make the majority of the [cheap] radar detectors currently being marketing by Radio Shack out of compliance." As a result, Radio Shack might have decided to take the small loss and sell the existing out-of-spec units prior to [date]. Has nothing to do with Vg-2.

I believe Mike with obtain the proper certification for V1 that will allow him to continue to sell units without skipping a beat.

I've read the FCC rules and I understand them pretty well. Have you or it is this just more rumors? Sorry I know you are only following orders...maybe you can tell us what the "radio shack memo" alluded to? Or may you can post a link to this new "law"?

But the question still remains.

Is that radar dector good, good enough for that kinda price?

so the V1 and 8500 are VG-2 protected..... is this a 100% effective rate against police detection of your radar with these 2 models?

I have a passport 7500 and it works well, and I'm happy because it only coast like $200. But if your willing to spend the get the V1 because I haven't herd anything bad about it except for the price.
