Cool. Thanks for posting that. I had always wondered about those license plate covers that supposedly absorbed the laser.

Once again, Shawn saves the day with facts.

I won't be buying those plate covers now.

It's just a matter of time before all states pass a law against laser jammers.

wait so the jammers dont work if you are hit within like 500 feet? unless you are going REALLY fast, i think the cop would get you within that range.

Test also doesn't include the other jammer, that some people have tested, & say work. It's a windsheild mounted unit. I forget what's it's called though. It's like $500.

Why did they test just those? I have Bel's Laser Pro and it works just as well as my old Blinder M-10. I would think they would test all the big names out there.... dumb.

Well, it would be nice to have seen it tested. I do know of someone who is rather happy with their Blinder.

I do like the idea of the 5-second "duration" -- the police are NOT stupid and will have a look-see if a unit "blanks" their LIDAR for an extended period of time...

I wonder how many transponders they were using for testing?

im doing an internship at www.aidesign.com (the shop, not the web page) in january and they install lazer jammers. they said that it is very hard to make them illegal becuase its just tampering with light. the government can regulate radio waves and such, but can they force you not to turn on lamps in your house? one things for sure, im happy in NY where its legal

Well, a high-powered laser could be considered "tampering with light" ... so where do you draw the line.

I wonder what the thinking would be if people were boring holes in your car door with a beam of light? That may sound silly, but they also regulate the color of lamps on the outside of a car and outlaw the use of certain color bulbs on a car's exterior.

Certain laws may be hard to enforce, but it does allow for selective enforcement depending on circumstance. If enough revenue is generated, don't be surprised to see other states follow suit with laws banning any device that interferes with police operations (light beam powered, or otherwise). I could give you another round of analogies, but the existence of 4-block long towns with million dollar police budgets for freeway enforcement should give pause...

Radar and light are just different frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum.

It all depends on how the law is written. Since a lidar jammer simply emits concentrated infrared light, and there is no government body that regulates the transmission of light, this is why currently lidar jammers are legal in most states. Active radar jamming is illegal in all 50 states because if you transmit radio waves, you need to be licensed per FCC regulations, and they certainly aren't going to license you to operate a jammer.

HOWEVER, states are getting more clever in the wording of their laws. Currently in CA, DC, UT, MN, VA and NE the law is written that it is "illegal to use any device that intefers with a speed measuring instrument, either actively or passively." With the law written this way, any jammer would be illegal as well as plate covers, etc. I'm sure eventually all states will be like this.
