Kumho MX Impressions

These tires stick like glue!! I've finally had a chance to go around a few corners after scrubbing these tires in. Man are they sticky. Around orners that had the "Whistlin' Michelins" howling I can hit about twice as hard with no howl at all. They do give lots of warning at the limit but the limits seem to be really high. Am noticing there is a bit of body roll now with the comptech/koni suspension. (might have to get some sways).

Now for the bad news. These tires are not for everyone. The ride is fine in the 235/45/17 size but they are a bit noisy at 40-60 mph. Hardly noticeable at freeway speeds. They also flat spot pretty badly overnight so the first few miles are really rough. If you want all out grip and can live with a little noise.(it's not horrible but you can hear it) These are very grippy tires. Can't wait to try them on an auto cross.

Good review! I'm actually getting a set of them for my S2000. The dealer told me they were comparable to the Bridgestone S03s for a lot less money.

Can you explain further on what you mean by "flat spot"?

How are they in the rain? Also, how much of the grip differential you're seeing between the new tires and the old ones you had on is due to tire wear?

I think he is talking about when he parks the car for the night and goes to drive it the next day. The tires have minor flat spots from sitting in one spot. You feel it when you first drive the car, then it goes away. My pirelli's did the same thing.

when the tires warm up and air expands inside, flat spot goes away...doesn't affect safety or life of the tire

As CiLver2.3 and Scooter have stated the flatspotting is where the tire retains the shape it had while sitting still for a long time so the tire is a little out of round until warmed up as oppsed to flatspotting from locking a wheel with the brakes which is permanent. Pretty common with an all out performance tire.

They are great in the rain! Stick almost as good as the stock tires did in the dry. My stock tires only had 5000 miles so I don't think wear was an issue. The stock tires are designed to be very quiet and have low rolling resistance. The Kumhos sacrifice some comfort for all out grip. Usually less tread gives better traction as most race tires have no tread at all but you can't drive on them in the rain.

Thanks guys for explaining the "flat-spot", I will take a note of that when I put mine on.

I have had my MXs for about 6 months now and I really like them. Also, I have not noticed the out of round feeling (flat spot) some have described. I also have not noticed the noise. My Michilins had 60K on them whin I traded so maybe the MXs just felt so good I didn't notice anything else.

By the way I paid $90 each for mine at Discount Tire. What did you pay?

I've had mine since this Spring and I pretty much agree with ChadT 100%. They definately do have a flat-spot in the mornings and they are a bit noisier than most tires--but that's what the Comptech exhaust is for--to drown out that sound!

The tread pattern on these tires is also awesome looking--incredibly aggressive. For the money, they can't be beat.

$90 for MXs?!?

I paid $121 ea for 235/45/17 not bad for this grade of tire. YOu sure you got the MXs? Tire Rack had the 711s for $73 in this size. $90 is a real bargain for these.
