Kansas Trooper clocked me....
Kansas Trooper clocked me....
...from the stopped position. He was in a traffic stop with an SUV already pulled over, the Trooper has his lights flashing, he was in his car, the driver was in his SUV. Traffic stop could have been over or just getting started...I don't know.
Anyway, I come flying over the hill, there they are on the right shoulder. No radar. Kansas law requires you to give one lane (if you can) so I merge left. I usually slow down but traffic was flowing and there's three lanes and it's a sunny day and I'm only doing 80 maybe 85 in a 65.
As soon as I pass, I get a full burst of Ka band. V1 arrow clearly pointing to the rear. Of course I didn't hit the brake [lights] but I'm thinking I am caught. I kept going another mile, then I exited just in case....no cop.
My question is does our car create a lot of wind when we drive by a parked vehicle? Could it be that the cop felt this sudden wind rush and when he looked up, there I was doing well over the limit? There were other cars behind me (so I don't see how he got a good reading).
This isn't the first time I've been clocked this way and at other traffic stops when the cop was leaning in my window, I have seen him stand upright and glare at a passing motorist who was either speeding or passed too closely. I failed to slow this time and almost got caught. Lesson learned...again.

Our cars dont generate that much wake as they pass at high speeds. But I often pass police with stopped cars and dont get any blips of radar until after I pass the cruiser. I know some of it has to do if hes firing radar in "pulse lock" ( something a state trooper friend told me about on the new guns that they just fire blips intermittently so if there is no opposing traffic/objects to bounce the signalas you approach you may not get a warning until after you pass and get tagged.... Happens to me alot actually on 295 and 95.

My car is red too, and I bought it knowing full well that being red would make it easier for the cops to pick me out in traffic

I've just always wanted a red sportscar...
For a second i thought he timed u going from 0 - 60 from a light and ticketed u for getting up there too quickly. But i forget we drive a CL so couldnt have been THAT

But considering highway patrol/troopers spend alot of time sitting on the side of the road seeing cars fly by.......i'm sure they can approximetly tell how fast a car is going just by seeing it pass. Cant imagine it would be that difficult to tell whether a car is going 65 or 85 by the gust of wind, noise and how quicky it passes a sitting object such as a car (likely the trooper's)

We were "chatting" and the subject of the radar and speeding came up. I had to ask, "Can you generally tell how fast someone is going .. how good is your guess?" He proved that he was within about +/- 3 MPH by letting me stare at the radar while he let a few 80-90MPH speeders fly by (55 MPH era). He made a point of saying he KNEW when people were going over 80MPH...
The veterans know...
BTW, if you are ever running down the road, beware of truckers, they get a "break" for "ratting-out" fast moving speeders in deserted areas (way too long story)...

I have a story about truckers...
I was on the 710 Long Beach where there's lots of trucks headed south towards the docks. They travel in a convoy formation to save fuel and not get in the way of other motorists; thats great and all but if one truck in front gets into a clumsy little accident, the entire convoy stops and its like a goddamn Wall of China barrier blocking traffic for more than a mile. :shakehd:

LOL
This happened only seconds before I had to make a change onto another freeway the 91 Orange east.
