Guys
Which way does the air filter go in?
With the filtering element flat side facing up or facing down?
Thank you

Flat side going up?!
I thought that would present less filtering surface to the incoming air so I put it in folded side up. Seems fine and with a little grease on the tabs I finally got it in.
I got mine from Ahmotors. Cost for filter is $48. Total was almost $55. High! The part number for the Type S is 33-2178.

It should only fit in one way. The ridges/fins should go down, just like the stock filter.
I had no problems with the tabs, everything slide back together fine.

The proper way to put it in (because I just asked this question a few days ago and confirmed it with friends) is to put the flat side up and the protruding side facing down.
With that said, it will fit both ways. In fact, it is an easier fit when you put it in upside down. When you put it in the correct way (flat side up) it's a bitch and a half to get the cover back on because the seal of the K&N is a little taller and wider than the stock one. It makes it hard to get the tabs through the slots. I was able to do it without any grease or anything. The key is to do it on a severe angle with some firm pressure while pulling up on the slot with a finger or two. I didn't have to trim the filter or cut it any to fit the screws like others have mentioned.
WORD OF CAUTION: Closely examine the engine side of the filter (flat side) before you install it. Mine had an errant piece of the wire mesh stuck in there that would have been swallowed by the engine had I not examined it before I installed it.

True enough I fit it in both ways. But it fits in easier (and correctly) flat side up which of course presents the taller filter element to where it should be. Down to the ground. Btw I found a handfull of leaves, feathers and other junk on the bottom side of the OEM filter. At least it worked but if I ever go with a real CAI ($100 heh heh...puleeze) I'd feel better getting the bypass. I mean for $50 how could you not want to rest easy thinking hydrolock?

Just curious ... if you have to pay $55 for a drop in filter? why not pay $100 for a CAI including a filter
