K&N Drop In Install Process

Hi all...glad to be part of the board.

I recently installed the K&N drop-in, but it was a royal pain in the !@*. I am not a mechanic, (actually telecomm engineer) but I am no dummy either and this thing 'bout ticked me off.

I finally got the screws on the lid to bite after mashing the lid down and toward the engine as hard as I could while turning them. A look at the K&N shows that it is missing some molded-in indentations where the screws pass by as compared to the stock Honda-made job.

Same thing here. It took me 30 minutes of fierce pushing, but it finally gave way. They are a real pain and I have yet to see any increase in performance or gas mileage. Oh well, at least you only have to replace them every 100K miles!

The trick to putting it back together is to smear some silicon or regular grease on the top flat part of the filter where the upper part of the air box makes contact. Also put some on the (2) tabs and where the tabs seat. It went together so easy this way I had to take it back apart to make sure it was assembled correctly.

I got my K&N 33-2178 filter through Performance Products for $48 (incl shipping and no tax). It's been installed for about 1000 miles now and I haven't noticed any improvement in performance or gas mileage over the stock filter.

(You can't buy the 33-2178 online, you must call to order): http://www.performanceproducts.com/

Is there an increase in intake noise?

Slight increase in intake noise at high rpm. The good thing about K&N filters is you only buy them once and they only need service every 30,000/50,000 miles. They are not magic, they will not make you have to drain excess gas from your tank or give you 25 extra horespower. They ARE one well engineered product that is well worth the money.
