K&N or Comptech OEM Filter????
I have a 2001 Cl-S.
Which OEM filter. . . K&N or the Comptech foam filter?
I just want a cheap first mod.
I'm probably going to get a CAI maybe during the summer.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Adam.

I just changed out the Comptech foam filter in my Icebox for the K&N filter this past weekend. Can't really tell much difference. I just like K&N filters better than the foam. The foam filter tend to get dirty a little faster.

I have the K&N drop in filter in my stock air filter compartment. I'm sure performance wise, it's practically performs the same as the Comptech air filter. I bought mines from O'Reilly's Auto Parts here in Houston, TX for $40. Both Comptech and K&N improve air flow over the stock filter. You can further improve air flow by removing the resonator located at the bottom of the stock air filter compartment leading to the wheel well. It constricts air quite significantly.

Oiled foam vs. oiled cotton filter media. Read around the internet (or whereever). You'll find pros and cons for both materials.
You'll find that those who oppose cotton media (K&N, Green...) think that it is an inadequate filtration device. They say that you'll be sacrificing engine wear for the increase in flow. They say that foam retains high flow as well as good filtration.
You'll find that those who oppose foam (like Comptech, Amsoil, UNI, many others) filters state that they have poorer, or more turbulent flow when compared to cotton media, but they still offer increase flow over OEM paper filters without sacrificing filtration.
You'll find many that state OEM paper filters are the best way to go because they filter well and protect the engine at the expense of flow. Proponents of these state that the advantages of increased intake flow in a street car is overrated. They also say that you'll never have to worry about over oiling or cleaning/maintaining a disposable filter.
Personally, I think the track record of K&N filters speaks for itself. If indeed their product was ruining engines with increased dirt input, this would have declared itself over the last 20+ years they've been available. There are many millions of miles on these products. If properly used (and this is an important issue), these are a good product. I think the advantage of the K&N panel filter in an otherwise stock airbox is that of it's longevity and reuseability. MPG gains really are quite tiny at best, if at all. The increased flow, especially combined with removal of the stock intake's resonator, my give comparable flow to that of an aftermarket intake.
Additionally, I think the track record of foam filters is quite good too. These are used quite commonly in motorcycle applications and a lot of performance applications. As long as the material is of good quality (like Comptech/UNI, Amsoil...), then you'll have good results. I do remember one write up on a HKS or Greddy foam filter on a Supra site (I'm sure someone will provide the link) where the material disintegrated...bad.
In the end, I think it's a bit of a coin toss. I find that K&N are easy to maintain and that maintenance kits are easily available at Autozone or PepBoys. With the Comptech (made by UNI), you have to buy the maintenance kit from Comptech and have it mailed or find it at some motorcycle store. Not that big of a deal, but maybe something to think about.
With any of these filters -- make sure you maintain them well, clean them at appropriate intervals (me - about 1 or 2 a year) and don't over oil. Many folks let them drip dry overnight after oiling so the media doesn't get over wet.
I've used both types of filters and have no issues with either. I've not done oil analysis and I think this would be the ultimate test of whether the cotton filter is doing it's job adequately, and if indeed it filters better or worse then foam. The intake tube does seem clean with both filters though, for what that's worth.
YMMV...

Evidently you didn't read the thread thoughly before responding. My respnse was to UNCTYPE-S who was asking about the K&N filter number for the icebox.
Thanks for providing the part number for the stock airbox.
