K&N air filter install question

This might be a dumb question but...

Which way does the K&N air filter for the CL-S get installed? One side of the air filter protrudes while the other side of the filter is flat. Which side goes up? In my last car the protruding side went up. It seems like you can make it fit either way in this car. Anybody know which way it goes?

Below is a crude illustration. The pertruding side that I'm referring to is on top in this illustration (dotted line). The bottom line is the seal. Which side should be up?

I'm not 100% sure (because I haven't put mine in yet) but my guess is that the side with the ridges goes down (which would be the top of your wonderful sketch ). That's how the one in my truck was installed.

Hey, I would have done better but there is a limit when using text.

Technically both sides have ridges but only one side of the filter as the protrution where the entire center portion of the filter protrudes beyond the surface of the seal. So, are you saying that this side should face down?

You're right... I just went and looked at my filter (in my trunk) and I'm sticking with my original response that the top of your sketch goes down. It will work either way, but it will sit in place better with the protruding side down.

Little or no sound change or HP gain. Plus it may provide for better gas mileage. At the very least, you won't have spend money on an air filter ever again. The cleaner and oil to maintain the K&N is cheaper in the long run especially if you do notice a better gas mileage (and gas prices are outrageous these days.)

This is all based on what I have read/heard here and experienced with my truck. Take it for what you will.

For the K&N to fit properly you might have to trim the side rubber may be 1/8 of an inch. Do a search

I had to trim mine a bit too. When trying to get the cover back on, you may need to use some vasoline or other lubricant to get the flanges to lock.

I get about 4 extra mpg on the hwy with the K&N. There's not much difference in the city.

I thought the trimming was neeeded only on the filter that was for the CL-P (33-2133) whereas the CL-S part (33-2178) was a perfect fit. Again, what I've read here.
