just using HID bulbs without ballasts

I have a friend telling me that he knows someone who uses just the "HID" bulb, not the ballasts, he says infact that it is a "hid" bulb, and not your standard hid bootleg halogen bulb. I found it hard to believe because there is no igniter to light the bulb initiailly, but he says it does work and it's bright?? Is this possible??

bullshit. I got one of those too. There is this kid with a Maxima at my school, one with altezzas, a huge black wing on a silver body, huge underbody neon lights, and FAKE hid bulbs. They are so obviously fake, but he contends that they are the real thing. He's like 'I gotta go spend $300 for a new headlight bulb' I'm like go fuck yourself asshole, those aren't even real HIDS dipshit.

That's BS! Xenon gas needs over 25,000 volt to ignite. Using 12V DC is impossible to make them light.

anybody who knows anything about HID's know that you need a ballast

I can't remember how I came across this site, but it's a good one: http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/headlamp-faq.htm
