Just raced an Audi TT (225HP)

So I see this convertible Audi TT around my neighbourkhood on my way back from Oberweis. I always look inside sporty cars cos when I see a guy driving it and a girl as the passenger, I know chances are good for a race.

This is a 225HP TT, I can tell from the dual exhaust and later I realize it is a 6 speed manual. Why? Well, we are standing at a red light where he is first in line, only I am behind him, not next to him (2 lane 45 mph road). So he starts going at green and what he does is starts as slow it can be in 1st and then, punches it, I folow him, next second shuts it off, changes gear (obvious) and he repeats that way all the way to 3rd. I am like, what the hell, so I find an upportunity and pass him with 2nd gear on, using the next lane, doing around 45mph or so. I see him not following so I change to 3rd and 4th leasurely.

Next light comes and it's the opposite. I am first and he is behind me, same type of road. I am thinking, the guy did not race before, he wont race again. So I start going at around 70% load. I see the guy testing me. He is obviously trying to stay with me. And now he guns it and changes lanes to pass me.

Temperature is 37 and falling. Flurries here in Chicago today. At this point, we are doing around 50mph and I am in 3rd. When I see him passing me, I go to 2nd and gun it.

At around 75 I catch him and we are dead even till 97mph. Next sec. I am bearely pulling on him, I am looking at the speedo and I we are doing 103mph anor so and it's obvious that the guy cannot pull on me. Traffic come up on us fast, so we shutt it down. Because as you know our 3rd goes to 110 or so, at 103 I am not doing 260HP, more like 247HP or so. So I am pretty sure, I am faster than this TT.

At this point I am passing my subdivision's light where (I should have turned), because I am sure the guy wants more. But too much traffic. I am changing lanes, I let him pass me and stay behind him. As he passes I look at both of them and the guy looks pissed. The girl is laughing her ass off.

The guy is so pissed at this point that he did a stunt where he almost crashed. He did a right, left, right (changing lanes) and almost touched a minivan. I am caught behind the minivan.

This is my area so I know what's ahead. And the Weber Road entrance to I55 is less than 200 yards ahead. So I am thinking, if the guy gets on the highway, I will kill him, since this TT's big weapon is the quatro, which works only with a race from a standstill. Unfortunately, I lost him. He did get on the highway, I saw him, but traffic was so heavy, I could not get behind the line. Eventually turned around with the icecream being all shook up so bad where I could not tell it was 2 different flavors (instead one shook up flavor) due to the thrown all different directions in the car due the race.

Finally, I must say that my gas tank was as low as it can be. The light went on just before the race. And dont forget the fact that I was alone in the car and he had the girl (small girl, I weigh about 210 pounds). But, he never saw my redline in any gear. Only in second when I was trying to catch up to him which does not count.

Bottom, line, as I expected, the TT cabrio is slightly slower than our Auto CLS.

I played around with one today and our cars were pretty equal. He might have taken me in the long run but we didn't get to find out.

I agree on the heavy part. They are heavy. Even in coupe version. But the 6 speed manual gives him a big advantage. The power is not bad. 225HP and 207 pounds of toorque. Plus the peak power comes pretty early, (5900 rpm). The weight of the car I raced is 3472 pounds. So my car is 100 pounds heavier. It all makes sense when you look at everything.

The sad thing is that the guy got a sports car and payed $41K (that's the typical Market Price with the typical options according to Edmunds) and he loses to an auto CLS. Beyond Sad.

if the guy knows to drive, the coupes (non convertable) can be deadly... trust me, do not think of it as a 225 HP car..my friend has one, raced him in a stock TL-P, which isnt much of a fight, but he pulled like 3 cars withn like 3 seconds or so

Ya know, I'll never understand this line of thought....

Do you really think most people shell out $41K for an Audi TT so that they could beat less expensive cars in a street race? LOL, I doubt it....

Like you said yourself-- Some people look for balance when buying a sporty car- a nice blend of power/handling/responsiveness/braking/overall feel etc.....

I'm sure you had fun in your little street race with the Audi, but I'd bet that the Audi driver didn't lose any sleep over it either. He probably didn't even give a shit

He might say that, but it wont be the same as comparing a TT with a CLS. At least both of them are luxury cars.

From a standstill, I am sure a TT 225HP 6MT coupe would beat me.

Tom I agree with you with the first part of your message. Yes this guys would have gotten a Vette or a Cobra (and saved some) if he were looking for all out straight line performance, etc. I did not mean my statement to sound like it did. Look at me, as you said, I am itching for a Boxster S with this thing does the 0-60 in 5.5 and I will have Mach 1s and STi cars beating me (other cars too).

But I can assure you, this guy did get pissed. As I wrote in my message, I saw his face, plus he pulled a stunt that almost had him crash at the end. He was young, maybe the car was not his, who knows.

Finally, I LOVE your signature. Seriously. I am with ya.

Hahahaha...not defending Audi, you silly fruitcake.

I was simply stating that I didn't understand why some people tend to think that way..... and even gavriil agreed (he posted it in the first place) that he didn't mean to sound that way that he did.

If I was a street-racing kid, I'd pick up a new Mustang Cobra for $34K, swap the blower pulley for a smaller one, and piss all over nearly any car on the road. But I'm not, so I won't.

That said, if somebody in a cheaper car beats me on the street in my Audi TT/350Z/Porsche Boxster/M3, well, I just don't give a shit. I wouldn't buy ANY of those cars to drag race anyway.
