Just had a rude awakening
Just had a rude awakening
Maybe some of you already know this, but I'll go ahead and warn everyone.
Last night, after parking my cls in my girlfriend's garage, I left my headlights on. I always leave them on becasue of the auto off feature. Well, since my car was safe in her garage, I made the mistake of leaving my keys in the ignition. NEWS FLASH! The auto off does not work if the keys are in the ignition. Duh! What was I thinking? Obviously I was focused on other activities. Anyway, I got in my car this morning and the battery was dead becuase the lights had been on all night. No surprise there. I was surprised to find out that I had no access to my trunk by my remote or the trunk release button on the door. Neither would work. Also, I could not shift the car into nuetral, even with my foot on the break and the key turned to the on position. I could not even push it out of the garage to get a jump. Luckily my girlfriend had some cables in her exploder that were long enough to reach accross the garage, becuase my cables were locked in my trunk. Got her started just fine.
Be aware. If your battery is dead, you will not be able to move your car in nuetral or get in your trunk. Thank God the hood does not have an electronic release. Better keep your jumper cables in the back seat where you can get to them.

That is what the little slot to the right of the shifter is for. Take out the plastic insert, and push your ignition key down in the hole. This will allow you to shift the vehicle into neutral.

Why didn't you just reach through the passthrough to get the jumper cables out?

Yeah, it's hard to believe that a dead battery would leave you so stranded. I'll have to check out my car thorough to see if these all work on mine. I don't think all the CLs have the emergency trunk release.
BTW, I never leave my key in the ignition; regardless.

Thanks for the headsup! Although, even with the headlights' auto-off feature, I never leave them on when leaving the car. Some habits are hard to break.

Remember those Lawman Autolocks? Those things are obsolete. Liek the other guy said you can just stick a screwdriver in the shiftlock release and you can move the stick. My mother's 1990 Legens has that, so did the 95 Mark VIII, as well as the ML320.

It's amazing that someone is lazy enough to leave the light on and dumb enough to leave the key in the ON position, all at the same time. You should never leave your key in your car overnight EVER, even if the car is in the garage. If a child is injured by playing with your car, you can get into a serious legal problem. Not worth it!!
No matter how much auto engineers come up with the new idiot-proof features (like the auto light off) on our cars, it's amazing how some people always find a way to defeat them.
Why is it so hard for them to come up with a fail-proof simple feature to prevent the battery drain? If the batter hits below a certain level (like last 10%), just shut it off, so simple.
Modern cars have state-of-the-art computer technology but they can't prevent a simple battery drain. That doesn't make sense!
Even my $10 calculator has a auto-off feature to prevent the battery drain!!!!!

Here's why: cost. If it is going to cost $20 extra dollars in those batteries to put in this feature, why on earth would you put this in there for the 100 or so people who really need it. So I guess we better do this too:
1.For $15 we can hookup the tires to the horn and the horn will blow when the tire pressure goes below 10 psi since some people let the tires go flat even though they can use a simple gauge to check it occassionally.
2.For $25, we can hookup the fuel tank to the Navi so that a message will repeat over and over on the Navi and keep planning routes to gas stations since some people drive their car until it runs out of gas.
3.For $9, we can .... and so on.
Acura doesn't make batteries. Battery companies make batteries and they make batteries to make money. They want batteries to go dead. If they make a battery that warned you for $15 more, Acura wouldn't buy them; nobody would buy them. They would buy the $15 cheaper batteries. Battery company would have a lot of $15+ extra batteries in the warehouse with no buyers. And Acura can't make an electronic warning system for low batteries (at a low cost), why? Why would you want your battery to give out on the last few ounces of energy; I would want to be able to use the last 10%.
Remember Acura has to buy 100,000s of these whatever they are; batteries or warning system. All for about 1000-2000 people. Screw them. $$$$$COSTS$$$$$$$

Some Ford cars got that option avaliable i think. I have done work on some ford cars that had that device installed on them. It is made by Visteon for ford.
