Are jack stands enough for a sway bar install?
Are jack stands enough for a sway bar install?
If the weather is good sometime either later this week, or the weekend, I'm going to be doing the Comptech sway install. I've got a 2 1/4 ton jack stand along with two jack stands. Will the jack stands be sufficient to do the sway install (clearance wise), or do i need something else. I have access to ramps also, but putting a FWD car up on ramps is a rather scary experience.
Looking for ideas.
Thanks!

2 jackstands would be ok but 4 better to save time! Trust me its really a convenience to have 4! Goodluck with install. Make sure links on sways are tight or you will experience knocking sounds of the sway bar striking cross frame!
What do you mean by links? I don't have the sways yet, so I'm not able to visualize this part.
I borrowed my buddy's torque wrench, so I'll be able to torque the bolts to the proper spec. And I've got the lithium grease too...

Dumb question: how safe is it to lift your car on four jackstands (one per wheel area)? The jack lift points are pretty narrow.
...and which side do you lift first if you're going to go up on all four? I imagine the 60/40 weight may make some sort of difference.

You really only need one jack stand for the front. Just place your jack under one corner (I did the driver front), and jack the hell out of it. Place the stand under that corner and your're good.
Unbolt the bar supports from the frame.
Unbolt the endlinks from the A-frames (not from the bar, well, do it if you can, but it's usually a really bitch).
You can pull the bar out by rotating it. It tends to get hung up around the exhaust coupler, but it comes right out. ** Make sure you take note of how the bar sits when it's in there (saves you from pulling it out and reversing it.)
Unbolt the endlinks, and make sure you place the right ones on the right end of the new bar.
If you have 2 people it's easier here, but can be done with one. Slide the new bar back back through (turning it like before).
Once the bar is in there, hook up the end links FIRST! Damn... Wish I'd remembered that from the first time! Then do up the frame mounts. BTW. www.prothane.com makes urethane bushings for the front bar (it's easy to swap out later, so don't worry about it).
That's it, just do the back (it's a shit load easier since you don't have to screw with the exhaust.)

I just did springs and sways this weekend. I did it with two jackstands, first the rear then the front. In the rear I lifted the car using the rear tow hook. I had to use blocks with the floor jack to get the car high enough to slip the jackstands under the car. Maybe my stands are taller. The wood blocks had to be just right so they would not slip out. Kinda scary, but it was good enough to get the jackstands in and out. In the front, I lifted using the crossmember right in the middle. When you get under there you will see a spot right in the middle just in front of the engine. No blocks needed there. Comptech sends teflon tape for the rears, and nothing is needed for the front. If your going to torque the end link nuts you will need an open end wrench adapter for the socket end of the tq wrench. You need to insert an allen wrench into the end of the stud that the bolt goes on to keep the stud from turning, so you can imagine you will not be able to get a socket on the nut. I just tightened it up and let it go at that. The specs are 28 ftlbs for that nut, so if anything I may have over tightened it just a bit. I hope this helps.
