Bottom line: Compression on cylinder #2 is 10psi (no, I didn't forget a zero! )Other cylinders range from 120psi to 160psi.

Engine is coming out next week and a brand new block + new heads are going in. I thought long and hard about building the entire motor before putting it in, but decided against it. With my MBA coming up, I need a reliable car for the next three years and a new motor will do just that. Since everything is coming out, a new clutch (stock), oil pump, water pump and obviously all new gaskets are going in as well.

I am having the dealer do everything else my resale will be shot when it comes time to sell. The car has 58K miles now so it should easily do another 100K without any problems.

It's the price for playing... but I don't really regret anything cuz I had a blast!

Now I am looking long and hard at those new twin-turbo BMW 335's

 

What did you do that it went? Was it a sudden thing, or just long term results of all the power?

that's sort of what happened to my last car, i was making ok power, but it didn't seem right after awhile, went to a dyno and things werent right, opened up the motor... rings were shot and there were tiny hairline cracks all around the piston tops.

 

It's just the side effects of 30K of turbocharged miles - probably detonation that was inaudible and slowly had a detrimental effect on the motor.

My car will be 4 years old this August and had 58K miles.

 

Since when is the warranty 3yr/60k? It's 5yr/50k miles.

kinda weird that only the number 2 cylinder was noticably affected. you would think that all of htem would be fuxord somehow.

 

It is possible the middle two cylinders on both banks get the most air - something you NOS users might think about. I don't think this plenum equally distributes charge.

 

I can vouch to that. #2 cylinder = with my blown motor. All others were fine.

 

I can vouch to that. #2 cylinder after too much NOS = That plug was also the most shot by far. The shop who rebuilt my engine recommended changing that injector b/c it just didn't look right. Maybe it was just the design of the plenum causing it to run leaner than the other cylinders.

Sorry to hear of those troubles. It definetly was a case of accumalitive detonation that happened over time. I think if you were to have had a knock detector on the car to alert you to the problem and the water injection on early in the life of the turbo, you would have taken care of the problem. I had a couple good bangs of det early on, but have taken care of it for the most part. This thing wants to do a brief det when the IMRC is activated and when VTEC crossover happens. This was fixed buy adding fuel just before the crossover and it took care of that. The only thing that will fail on mine if I don't get any sever detonation, would be a failure of the rings. In the meantime I'd expect to enjoy this boost for thousands of miles.

Keep us posted on the new motor. What are you going to do with the old one? Are they going to transplant the pulleys from the front of the old one to the new motor? I really need a complete timings belt gears from the front of j32, anyone can pm me on this if you can help.

 

Well, it lasted 30K of boosted miles on 91-octane, so the motor is pretty tough. Probably 93-octane by itself would have done the trick.

 

I don't have any parts from the motor as I am doing a 3-way swap with someone else to allevaite the $$ pressure on me.

the water injection being the only safeguard he was using?

I bought a CL-S 6MT engine and tranny, the engine has bent cams... so I was gonna build it up...

I'm gonna do a 3.5 by swapping in the ody crank

I was gonna use RL pistons and bump the compression, but from reading on here the best way to get high HP is lower comp

so i plan to use the CL-S pistons for now then when its time to boost (meaning i get the $$ to do it right) then I'll throw in the TL-P pistons to drop comp down to 9ish:1

my ultimate goal is 500whp when the boost is cranked, and daily drive on 300


now what I'm trying to figure out is what do I have to do to have the engine reliably handle the power?

A good tune is critical when running at those levels. ThinJim bought that kit and took it to another level. There can be detonation that is not detected by the ear. ThinJim had a Knock light that detected detonation and tuned it accordingly.

Take a look at some of ThinJim's posts on his Turbo kit.

 

Those are big numbers. I'd do A LOT of research beforehand.

 

It's all in the tune, Now a days with technology can eliminate alot of the issues we were having 10-15yrs ago
