but my question is: Is the sequential shifter connected mechanically or electrically to the transmission that makes pushing it "upshift" and pulling it "downshift"?

And is there a way, if any, to make it the opposite, push = downshift and pull = upshift?

fsttyms1 did that conversion on his 2nd gen TL before doing the 6 speed swap

 

That's an interesting idea...I would have never thought to do a mod like that.
