Interesting info for Mobil 1 users

Last night I had a talk with a buddy of mine who is a mechanic at a large Mercedes dealership. I asked his thoughts on Mobil one and oil change intervals. He said that Mercedes started saying 10-15,000 miles between changes with Mobil 1. He said that that's too long. The problem is not with the oil, its with the filers. They cannot take the heat from the oil for that long, and the elements get hard and brittle and fail to do their job. He said that the oil can last 10-15K miles, but no filter can stay in good enough condition for that long to be effective. He said that 7,500 is probably the max for most filters he's ever seen. He says that in his personal cars he uses Mobil 1 and changes at 5-7,000 miles. I've know this guy for 15yrs, and he knows his stuff.

I agree, with fbzakos and do the same. There's a noticeable difference everytime I change the oil.

I use to change my oil in my maxima every 3000 miles w/ mobil 1 and mobil 1 filter.

But realized that it was a waste.

in my S, I just use mobil 1 every 7500 w/ Honda filter.

you think the fram or mobil 1 filter can hold up past 7500?

Come on folks, how much is the cost of oil?

We are talking cheap insurance...

I always wonder about people "stretching" their fluid change intervals.

BTW -- I've heard all the talk about commercial users going a billion miles (j/k) per oil change when using synthetic, but do you really feel like being the "Poster Child" for long change intervals. I can see it now, "I only went 30,000 miles on my Mobil 1 and filter and my engine blew -- I'm really bummed-out."

Ouch!

Do you guys bring your own oil (Mobil 1) to the dealership or do they have it in stock? Or do you go to a quick lube place like Speedee (they are the only place I know of that carries Mobil 1)?

Thanks,

Ash

I agree with your friend about filters lasting 7500 miles max. And that is why I change my oil and filter every 7500 miles. Use Mobil 1 5W30 and OEM filter.

Don't know about Fram, but if you want a very good cheap filter look at the Purolator PureOne PL14459. Personally I don't use any synthetic because I don't see the point if i'm still going to be changing every 3000 miles.

About 3 years ago, consumer report did an extensive study on motor oils, definitely the most extensive study I have ever seen. It was tested with over 20 New York City cabs and you know what a grueling condition for the motor oil in that kind of condition in the summer. They changed the oil at 3000 miles and at 6000 miles for the two controlled groups. Guess what, after 50,000 miles, they checked the wear and tear of the engines by taking them apart, they were no differences in the wear and tear for the two groups. All the motors were well protected. Another very interesting observation, they tested over a dozen major brands of oil and some synthetics, there were no differences in the wear and tear either among these major brands. Think about it!!

This is correct. I have read it in several places and talked to several mechanics and they all say the same thing. The oil should be good for 12k-15k miles and the filers for 6k-7,500 miles.

I plan to change my Mobil-1 oil and filter at 6k-mile intervals.

first time I had the dealer put in mobil 1 and chared me nearly 8 dollars a bottle so I started brining my own. and the money isn't the issue. its just going in every 3000 is a pain in the ass.
