Integra thermostat replacement

Integra thermostat replacement

Tried to replace thermostat in 90 Integra. When I pulled off the water hose and removed that gizmo to which the hose connects to and that hold the thermostat in place, I was surprised to see NO thermostat underneath. Could it be that it was removed and not replaced by the previous owner? I think yes. But also, the space for the thermostat seems to be way too small and the one that I purchased at car place would never fit. Is there a trick to what I’m trying to do? (still learning).

I use to own an 88. I guessed on the engine type...etc. Here's a link:
