Intake resonance chamber
Intake resonance chamber
I just bought my CL a few weeks ago. Whenever I buy a "new* used car I like to look it over pretty thuroughly. I'm sure most of you are same. Anyway after doing research on sites like this I checked under the hood to see if the scheduled maintenance looked like it had been done. I checked all the fluid levels and they all look clean and fresh. I took out the air filter and it was brand new. I noticed under the air filter is a resonance chamber I'm guessing. Well even though my car had a clean carfax, it looks like it was in an accident. The resonance chamber was cracked nearly in half and one of the mounts was borken off. I removed it for now. Should I try to repair this one, find a new one, or just leave it off? What exactly does it do? Thanks guys.
PS: a search did not find much information.

I would keep it out.
The resonator's only real purpose is to reduce engine noise in the cabin, but really it just restricts air flow to the intake. Some members choose to remove it and replace their stock air filter with a K&N for slightly more agressive sound with better flow. Also, if you plan to install a CAI, you'll need to remove it anyway so you may as well save yourself the hassle of doing later down the road.

It may not have been in an accident. It may have been taken off by a past owner then replaced with a broken piece or put back wrong & then it broke. Putting it back is actually harder then you would think.
But leave it off. Your car will run a bit better with it off. It's not a very useful part & doesn't effect the car's driveabilty.

I have mine off almost a year i guess and its great. I also have a K&N drop-in. You can really hear v-tec kick in. I recently drove through some pretty big puddles and i was worried. so i took my filter out and my throttle body was bone dry.
cant go wrong!
