I'm getting better mileage with Xephyr CAI!

Purchased Car 9/1/00
Average mpg 9/1/00 - 12/31/00 = 25.7
Daily Commute = 57 miles each way from New Hampshire to Boston
1st 35 miles down Route 95 at 80-85 mph in D5
and V1
2nd 17 miles down Route 1 at 55-70 mph in D5
Last 5 miles in town at 20 mph in D4
Three days commute on one tank of gas

Usually after three days commute my tank is just above empty and mileage at about 345.
I put on the Xephyr CAI on Saturday 4/28.
That first week I noticed after a three day commute that gas gauge was between 1/4 and empty. I said "what the hell is going on!"
Today, Wednesday, after normal three day commute and gas gauge in same place as last week with mileage at 344 I decide to check mpg and it shows 28.6 mpg. Wow almost a 3 mpg gain. I'm going to continue to log mpg for next month and see what my true average gain is.

Maybe better mileage with warmer weather?
But why did it start right after the CAI was installed? Will keep you posted.

Do you have any gas mileage records from January to April 2001? But in any respect 28.6 mpg is quite good.. esp with gas prices these days. I noticed that after the break-in period of the car my gas mileage went up as well, I have averaged 29+ mpg these past few months (Feb-present). I have owned my CL-S since 11/01. Perhaps the combination of the intake, weather and car being broke in contributed to these good gas mileage numbers. Congrats.

Hi E1828:

I stopped keeping records the end of December. I also noticed the first few weeks of owning the car my mileage was poor: 20, 23, and 24 looking at my records here. It then got better. I agree it might be a combination of those three factors.

If you don't stick your foot in it, the AEM, Xepher, and or other CAI should give you better gas mileage (less restriction == less pumping losses == more efficiency).

After putting on the headers and AEM, I noticed that I didn't need to push down on the pedal as hard on the freeway at 70 MPH speeds.

Notice for the Ayatollas of doubt -- no I didn't have a strain gauge attached to the soles of my shoes...

Lol...my gas mileage dipped from 25 to 22 MPG for the first tank after I got my headers; I couldn't keep my foot off the gas. Then it went back to 25 for the next three tanks as I settled down. Then I got my CAI installed, gas milage dropped from 25 to 21.5 the tank after due to lead foot syndrome, then went back up to normal the tank after.

Does anyone know if this has to do with the ECU trying to remap itself? Or could it be a problem with my car...

1. Stock, I averaged about 280 miles a tank[20mpg].
2. After I installed the AEM CAI, my average improved -- 290-300 miles [increased 1-2mpg].
3. After tires, the average strangely dropped to around 260 miles [18.5mpg].
4. After headers, the mileage kept getting worse every time I filled up the tank. One time it was 240 miles [um..17mpg?!]. I also had lead foot for a while [doesn't everyone have it their first week with headers? ], but drove normal after the first two weeks and recently got 250 miles.

Each mod was installed about a month between each other.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Patrick

The tires will loose about 10%, but I think I'm only loosing about 5% (I'm running 39 PSI in my Toyos).

The sticky tires take more energy to move than the stock rubber. The stock rubber is very good in the gas mileage department.

I also thought that I had a "bad mileage" car until I took a few trips out of the city and got 30+ MPG at 80 MPH average.

If you drive in stop and go traffic, or the car isn't broken in, all bets are off (my opinion).

The mileage in city is so variable, that I have given up trying to figure out what is going on. My wife's Altima (4 cylinder) gets 13-16 MPG driving to work (10 miles in 30-45 minutes). Heck, the car is idling about half the time, and accelerating and stopping about 1/3 of the time, leaving 1/6th of the time for a short 300 foot "cruise".

Go for a drive with your foot out-of-it, and you can run higher pressures in your Toyos. I wouldn't worry about 36PSI or higher -- the tires should handle 50PSI.

Finally -- lay off the SS during any mileage runs, leave it in auto, and drive easy.

Also try using cruse control when possible... It's tuff to do sometimes, but you will get better gas mileage.

Stop and go traffic in the CL-S kills gas mileage! It seems that the car gets much much better gas mileage on the highway(obviously). I've filled the tank up 3x so far.
1-300miles/tank vsa on/auto
2-323miles/tank vsa on/auto
3-323miles/tank vsa off/ss on local road

You may also want to check to see when they stopped delivering Oxygenated fuel (that will make a big difference in gas mileage).

I'm assuming you all have your A/C off to get these MPG figures, am I correct? I average about 16 MPG tops, but I have my A/C on 99% of the time and also drive in stop and go traffic most of the time.

I started out getting 21 - 23 mpg when I bought the car (May 2000 - Oct 2000).

Then during winter (Nov 2000 - Jan 2001) the mpg went up to around 25.

Then I installed the CAI and mpg went up to 28 - 30 from (Feb 2001 - Apr 2001).

Summer weather hits now and I am using my A/C a lot. So (May 2001) I am getting around 24 mpg.

These are all from my records that I have kept and are all averages of my driving and my CL-S.

So far after checking with 2 fill-ups, I am getting 3.9 mpg more with just the k&n drop-in. I had about 7,700 miles on the stock filter.
