Im about to buy a cl-s. Question!

Its a 01 CL-S with 116k miles. The timing belt/water pump were just changed. The body and interior are in mint condition. I asked him about the tranny, and he told me that the dealer installed a oil jet kit, and it's never given him problems. He said it shifts very smooth. So my question is, at 116k miles, should i expect to encounter a tranny problem, even though the jet kit was installed? I have him down to $7300 for the car.

If you are not sure...ask him for the vin and call an acura dealer and have them run the vin number to see if the transmission was replaced at all. Also if the transmission was replaced find out if it was a rebuilt transmission or a new transmission. You never know about the these cl-trannies do some research and if you are comfortable with it, then buy it. Seeing how its an 01 and past 116k it is past the warranty. Happy hunting.

I checked already. Its the original tranny. Only the oil jet kit has been installed. Is it a risky buy? Its a beautifull car. Too bad the tranny's are crap!

Werd. Do yourself a big favor and get a 6-speed. Doesn't matter if the auto has been replaced. It's no different and it'll fail just the same. You can see plenty of people in the transmission section have had a number of the replacements finished (some within just a short time of being replaced). Save yourself a big headache and the constant fear that you may be in for a repair bill without warning and wait til you can find a 6-speed. The extra power and control you get from a standard transmission is worth it alone.

Listen to this guy. The 6spd in these cars is amazing. Perfect gearing, nice and close, tight shifts, and 600 lbs lighter than the automatics.

Plus you get better gas mileage. I don't think anyone in an auto is gettin 26-28mpg mixed driving. So much more fun to drive. The auto is a slush-box even in manual-matic mode.

7300 is a alright price, if your tranny goes thats another 3 g's.........so if u can find a better one for 10 grand then do it, maybe with less mileage

But replacing the tranny for $3k doesn't mean it won't go out a year later and cost you another $3k. It's happened plenty.

right but theres no way to know when and if the transmission will go out so either way its a bit of a risk. My parents TL got a new trans and they were given a 2 year warranty

and i think u might have missed what i was getting at with my post...if he's worried about having to get a new transmission then he should automatically add 3 grand to his price range, Thats why i said look for a car for 10g's with less mileage if he was originally planning on spending 7g's and possibly another 3, save yourself the headache from the start.

plenty have proven that less mileage does not mean your tranny won't go. Some have gone at 20k, some never go so it's really a crapshoot

edit: 1000th post!!!

the trannies are actually hit and miss. some have lots of tranny problems and some have high mileage and still on original trannies. To solve the tranny problem completely, I plan to get aamco to rebuild it and get the lifetime warranty. sure its a extra 1k but you never have to worry about the auto tranny ever again for as long as you own your car

1000th post also!

my old CL had 210KM (130k or so miles when i sold it.) and i never had a tranny problem. that said the fluid was burnt every time i checked it. I would just spend the extra to get a 6mt if you can afford it.
