Question IAT Sensor Mod Question

I heard from a few guys at school that they use an IAT sensor mod to gain leaner fuel mixture in their cars. The reason they do it and not an ECU upgrade is because it can be removed easily and has good results. My question is, does doing this cause damage to your engine and to what extent? Also, I've heard about modding your ECU to remove the governor that the manufacturer puts in place is doing that and this IAT sensor mod the same thing?

if you run your stock engine(block/pistons) too lean you will litrally melt it...
in the newer cars you cant because other sensor will pick this up and throw a code or go in to limp mode..
you better know what your doing...
