I was thinking about upgrade to S4 automtatic because

of all mods available, better handling, nicer paint, and the list goes on.
But after reading a few posts on Audiworld.com I'm losing my interest.

Twin turbo repairs at 20,000 miles, a month without your car!!!

http://www.audiworld.com/forum/s4.html

I've got 23,000 miles on mine with zero repairs. Maybe sways are in order.

Here is info my link did not show:

A 19 month - 20,000 mile S4 observation...
Posted by mpm on 2001-05-10 19:37:31

Build date: 7/99

Repairs:
* 2 turbos
* engine wire harness
* right side head
* right side manifold
* washer bottle
* temperature sensor
* left side signal bulb
* Dealer expierence was positive

Like's:
* The torque of the S4 engine is still impressive
* Corner exit speeds are a real hoot
* The silver paint is first class
* The interior is class leading
* The attention paid to little details
* The seats are perfect for my frame
* The steering wheel has the perfect 9/3 position
* The NAV can find you great routes
* The brakes pull out your teeth when firmly applied
* Long hawl rides are wear free (especially the zenons at night)
* The stock package offers a great overall driving blend
* Quattro in the wet (especially when you come up on a Bimmer) is pure satisfaction!

Dislikes:
* The shifter (untill upgraded to a 30% UUC SS) was unacceptable
* The gear box is the weakest link
* The floor mats (untill upgraded to the now illegal Stat logo mats) were cheap
* Body roll can be too excessive
* The brakes hitch at slow speeds
* Lack of one touch up in the rear is odd
* Lack of a good voice activated phone is inconvient
* The NAV can send you in weird directions
* Rear seat leg room is too restrictive

Overall:
Even with my one month turbo repair, I love this car. It is a great place to do business.
The overall balance and blend of the components make this one of the best values in
the automotive world. Some cars are faster, others corner flatter, but the S4 is one
great package - and I do it all over again.

Have a great weekend...

I was at the track last Friday and there was a brand new Audi A6 2.7T there. It still had paper plates. Not sure how many miles he had on it. His first pass down the track something fell off of it and later I saw it on a flatbed truck.

OUCH!!

Beautiful cars... but I'll pass

Hehe, you think that's bad ... Look at the Dodge Stratus R/T forum at Edmunds. Holy cow. What a piece of crap that car is ...

And that car stickers around 25k too. The car is selling so slowly due to negative owner feedback that many people get the car for 22k ...

Hey Ahoooo,

I just did the COmptech springs and Toyo Proxes T1S and hugely improved the handling and grip. I don't think sways will help very much, so I doubt I'll do them. The springs lower the CG, don't hurt the ride at all, but are progressively stiffer when it counts as you attach a corner. And of course the tires stick like glue. I'd go springs first.

The S4 Automatic is the most unimpressive car I have EVER driven. Maybe I had too many expectations when I got behind the wheel... but the car really did nothing for me.

Granted the manual is a whole nother story. So I cant comment on that. But the autmatic is LAME... and TAME.

But yes... most of our gripes here are very minor compared to others. Like I said... my only major gripe is the paint. Its just so shitty.

Give the car a break! ONE guy has his turbo go out on him and you think the car's an unreliable POS?

A lot of the guys on audioworld.com have chipped their car from the stock .6 bar up to 1 - 1.2bar!

The only part I have seen that consistently fails is the TBB (Throttle body boot) but Audi already issued a recall for that and its been fixed.

Also the bypass valves have a tendency to tear, but gee if you are running 2 to 3 times the stock boost what do you expect?

For a mere grand this car goes from 14.4's to low 13's! Also if you buy the right chip, you can change the "mode" on the fly, race mode or normal. Unless the dealerhship rips out the ECU and takes a look, it appears to be a perfectly stock S4. You don't even HAVE to replace the exhaust either if you do a stage 1 chip.

I've done some research on this car, and for a performance/luxury car it seriously kick azz. You also have to realize a turbo'd car will probably never be as reliable as a NA car.

I've gotta weigh in on the reliability issue as well. I've had an A4 for a couple years and had almost no problems and great dealer expience with it. The only real problem I've had was after being rear ended by an integra (which was totalled inthe accident, btw. She rear ended me doing 40 and I was sitting still at a light).

After that accident they had to replace the entire exhaust system cause it was rammed forward, and the rear bumper and associated pieces. Total was about a $7k repair. Everything from the manifold back was replaced. The manifold took 5 weeks to order from Germany. Good thing the insurance company paid for my rental.
I've recently had trans problems as well, but the dealer thinks those are related to the same accident. They're covering it under warranty and replacing the entire trans tho, so go figure.
