I Really Need Advice On Intakes

Before I start I would like to say hello to all my fellow cl owners. I can't beleive what an awesome site this is. I own a Black on Black CL Type-S with NAVI. It is stock except for Dunlops. I wanted to get a performance filter and I was considering the AEM CAI. BUT, I just saw a similar CAI with no brand name on Ebay (item#7923814000) for much less. Is there really a difference?

Quality is the difference. You don't wanna learn this by hydro-locking your engine.

Stick with the brand names.

AEM
Zyphyr
Comptech

BTW - Welcome aboard.

I'll add Injen to the list as well. They are a great company and their intakes are almost clones of the AEM, so any of those three are the way to go.

Stay away from those cheapo intakes. In addition to not having any proof that their design actually works they are typically made from inferior material, and their service is no where near the service of the big three.

For example, when I was installing my Injen I screwed up one of the hoses. I called Injen and within 3 days, new hoses were at my door, at no charge... and keep in mind, I screwed them up during the install. YOu buy one of those cheapos on eBay and I'll guarantee you won't get that type of service....

injen, aem, or Comptech as everyone has mentioned. All are similar in performance but the Comptech is quieter and looks stock. The AEM and Injen have a nice roar to them under WOT. I have the CT one in my car.

hydro-locking is when water gets sucked up by the intake and enters the cyclinders. Water cannot be compressed as easily as air and so the engine goes :smitty: Usually results in bent pistons, rods and in general means a new motor.

yeah but...

Couldn't I just get an AEM bypass valve and install on the intake from EBAY. This would prevent a hydrolock. I looked at the pics of the AEM and of the cheap one for hours and all the bends are in the same places. Why would the AEM provide more horsepower?

I think the filters play a big roll too. The AEM and Injen filters are designed much better than those ebay knock-offs.

I have a K&N from my last car. I really just need the tube and hoses. I'll probably sell the other filter on Ebay for 1.00

Did you have the tranny checked for the recent service bulletin on it?

water gets sucked into the motor and seizes the internals...thats a general description..i'd personally get a ice box..im waitin for my custom weapon-r icebox..i'll have pics soon.. so yeah, if you decide to go with cai witch extends downwards to where puddles/water can be sucked in more easily don't forget to get a bypass valve.

shortram, cold air intakes w bypass valve, ice/air/box..pick one.

Make sure that filter will fit this tube. The filter needs to be 3", fyi for the Type-S.

I think you are stupid to not get a brand name and pay $100 more, if you cant afford it sell your car

AEM or CT, you can't go wrong really. If you are afraid of hydrolock (which, btw, is very very hard to do since you literally have to be WOT in standing water to do), get the CT for the piece of mind.

Congrats on your purchase... Best of luck with the mods... As mentioned by fellow peers aem, injen, and comptech... Comptech looks stock, and you can use a K&N filter to make the icebox a tad louder.... It also gives the most gain, which is very minimal to even consider... Under WOT AEM sounds the best, but please use the bypass valve to prevent hydro-lock....

I CAN AFFORD A BRAND NAME, RENEGAY. However, 100.00 for an AEM sticker seems stupid. Since nobody can really give me a valid reason why the brand name is better I will go with the cheap intake and add the bypass valve from AEM. I still save 100.00 and I expect the same results. I am trying to gain hp not make big companies richer. I'll keep you guys posted on the results.

No need for the hehe

But keep in mind, the reason AEM, CT, Injen charge those prices is because of R&D, quality of material (heat reducing v. head magnet [biggest factor of cheap intakes]), and WARRANTY.

Here are you valid reasons for purchasing a brand name also, cheap intakes don't provide proven results:

I have an AEM. I like it. It definately out classes the others. One of my friends got a cheepo on ebay and after about 3 months, half of it was covered in rust. And the filter seemed to actually seak out water. The Comptech or AEM is definately the way to go. If you check out the Black Market, I think there are a couple there for sale.

I just ordered the Weapon-R Secret Weapon intake and cold air box. I know there's plenty of opinions out there on this intake, but for me, I like to go with something more unique than the typical big name AEM or Injen, though they are both awesome intakes, have had both on past cars. In the end I'll probably end up replacing the WR foam filter with an AEM dry cone filter or old reliable K&N. My last intake on my previous Civic Si EP3 was a Neuspeed P-Flo. Wish they made one for the CL-S, but the Weapon-R is the closest thing to it. I'd definitely stay away from the no-name eBay intakes though. Crappy construction, terrible mounting hardware and usually come with no instructions.

good point to bring up; if it was AEM vs. injen i would pick the injen (granted prices are equal); the injen doesn't have history of mounts breaking where as a few cases of that has happened w/ the AEM.

edit: holy shit; old thread.

to be honest, with the I/H/E combo i never actualyl felt a difference.

But that's cause my butt dyno has no sensors I guess

I've experienced the same thing with the I/H/E combo on my past cars. I personally think an oversized exhaust is the worst thing to put on your car unless you're running a S/C or turbo and making 300 HP +. I've always gone with too large tubing and it sucks. As far as the intake, for me, it's more about the sound than the tiny HP gain. Any HP you notice is probably psychological.

Can someone provide the part # or thread for the P/N for the K/N filter to replace the Comptech foam.

Much appreciated and thanks in advance.
