I pulled on a STi...Here come the flames!

I was on my way home Saturday afternoon and a gorgeous black STi was in the lane to my left. A guy and a girl in their 20's were lucky enough to be it's passengers. I was semi-minding my own business traveling about 35 mph and I slowly passed them on the right. I was about 2 cars ahead and he gunned it and evened up with me. I gunned it and jumped 2 cars ahead to let him know I'd be interested in playing when we got the chance (a couple other cars around). We were approaching my turn-off but I said 'what the hell' and stayed on the road with the STi. As luck would have it we caught a light together. I motioned him to roll down his window and I told them how much I liked their car. His first question was 'is that thing blown?' I said back to him that there was no way I'd be able to get him at a light and he knowingly chuckled.

Here's the part that's gonna get me flamed...

Light turns green and we both floor it. I barely chirped my tires and took off. I still had my window down and heard the STi chirp it's tires! Through first gear we were dead even. He shifted and I pulled about 2-3 feet on him. My car shifted into 2nd and he gained about 1 foot back. As I approached VTEC I started pulling another 3 feet again! I hit the rev limiter in 2nd and we both had to shut down due to another light approaching. We both gave each other props and I turned back home with a grin!

Now, had he dumped the clutch at 5k I know the outcome would have been different. He would have jumped 4 cars on me at the light. But, this just shows you that from a roll, and in a straight line, the auto S/C can hang with a STi when traction isn't a concern. His one passenger may have helped me a little as well. Then again, my 19's probably helped him. We'll call it even.

Given what you said that's not hard to believe at all. Nice kill.

Are you running the HBP yet?

No, I ordered the HBP from Velocity Resources about 2 weeks ago but still haven't received it. I emailed them and they've yet to reply. Maybe backordered??

I'm pretty sure I would have pulled more decisively with the HBP. Or maybe I would have lost traction and blew up my tranny. I'm guessing 15-20whp more??

BTW, anyone know of a good dyno here in Seattle. I'm interested in doing a b/f and after of the HBP. Does anyone know if I'll need to increase the fuel pressure any?

Why would there be flames? It sounds like an honest kill to me. Besides, it isnt like you had just an I/H/E setup; your ride is blown. (Though I figured it should have been a bit closer than the outcome.) Nice work.

Peace.

Nice kill. I'm not surprised. I played with a STI and like you said if they don't launch at 4 or 5K they aren't anything special. The STI I raced didn't launch hard and only took me by 1/2 car til about 60.

Remember, this is the alternator pulley. So it would be very difficult to swap out on the dyno.

And no, you should not need to touch the fuel pressure.

And BTW, great job!!!!

Thanks for not pulling the bs flag out on me everyone. Nice to know ya got my back.

I called Velocity Resources today and they had no record of my sale...even though they charged my credit card for the pulley. Anyway, the guy was very apologetic and said he'd send it out right away. No harm done, I'm enjoying the stock boost.

For those of you still hung up on peak power output of the S/C, this is proof that power across the powerband is much, much more important!!!

No idea. His tires chirped so I'm guessing a couple thousand at least. We didn't talk after or I would have asked him.

The flames will come when you said the STi chirped his tires. It's pretty damn hard to chirp an AWD car... <shrug>

He meant chirp during the launch. If you read carefully... 'heard the STI chirp its tiers! Through first gear we were dead even'. It obviously wasn't a 2nd gear chirp!

Man... if you start reading these posts with a biased attitude to begin with, you won't give it a chance at all!

I read it right. I meant during a first gear launch. I was at the track with an STi and all day long he would just dead hook. No chirp, no squeal, nothing. I guess on normal ground you might chirp, but it would take some serious power to chirp an AWD car... maybe if you dumped the clutch? I would imagine it would take a good 5k dump to chirp the tires on an STi... anyone who has a WRX or STi or any other AWD wanna chime in? It was also weird, because if he was chirping the tires out of 1st, then he should have hooked pretty hard, but since you were even through first it just sounded weird <shrug> I have no doubt you ran the STi as you said you did... no car is invincible, and your cars are obviously the same class (within 0.5 seconds either way is the same class) Props to you and your run... you still running street tires or you have some sort of radial or ET Street?

Considering the amount of rubber laid down at the track, of course it won't chirp!! The street is different - from everything you seem to know about, this is a very basic concept!!

Haha... no doubt the street is different... No VHT. =) Like I said, I haven't seen it, not that I don't believe it, but I've never heard an AWD make a peep before. That's why I was asking if an STi/WRX/EVo/DSM could chime in.

On dry ground? Nice! =) Okay, I retract my statement then... that must be a freaking site to see, if you could spin the tires on an AWD and get smoke... must be freaking intimidating... hahaha...

Remember, the Syclone/Typhoon was all about torque. You could load up the torque converter launching at 12 - 14 PSI and get slammed back in the seat. On a cool day it would break all four loose for a moment.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but doesn't the STi allow you to control how much power is going to the front vs. back. Maybe he had this adjusted more to the rear wheels??

its not hard to lay down rubber w/an awd car. I've done that in my s4, typhoon, wrx, and in the evo.

I know what you are talkn bout and its rarely happens even w/ +500hp in the typhoon!!! Normally it just presses you back into the seat like a rocketship and its amazing how fast awd is off the line.

but then again friend is running drag radials... im sure if he was on stock tires awd burnout would be the norm. lol.

Oh yeah ive heard of stock STi's running 13.90's and even 14.20's on a bad run so its very believable. Up top you should rape him tho.

They only trap around 100-101mph, so they are pretty beat-able from a roll, even a 1st gear one. I'd love to race one from a roll or even a stop just for kicks, but they are rare around here.
