Two completely different cars. One is luxurious with a lot of hustle. And one is sportier. The Lexus is fast, quiet, very competent. The CL-S is smaller, FWD, powerful and just a completely different ride. Even though the GS is faster and more nimble, the CL feels lighter. JMO tho.

I personally would opt for the 1999 GS400, since it's a sedan, plus, the Lexus Certification allows up to 50K, and what.. 2 more years on the factory bumper-to-bumper.. but then your engine and powertrain are backed to 70K (or will it be 100K?) That's only 25K miles left on warranty b2b, and that includes those nitty gritty things that'll happen to a car .. i.e. rattles, creaks, squeaks, that annoy all of us.

The GS is also RWD, I would take into consideration your geographic location in the country .. how much snowfall do you get .. will you be driving in it w/ this car? Mileage .. do you drive far to work .. or on trips w/ this car? V8 vs. V6 .. you're not going to get great city mileage w/ the GS400.

Lexus Quality vs. Acura -- hard to say in this situation since you're buying a used Lex. vs. a Brand-new Acura. The CL-S is a little slower than the GS400 in terms of power to 70mph .. the interior is of a higher quality (in my opinion) in the Lex. The GS400 is more of a "money" statement, if that concerns you.

Best of Luck, let us know what you chose!

That's what i'm saying. I'm leasing it for 27 months, 24 of which will be coved by bumper to bumber warranty. I'm only paying 425 a months. I just don't know if it's gonna run as good as new for those 2 yrs

They are both incredible cars. FWD vs RWD is the big question. The weather is something to consider. Then again there's nothing like ripping it, and going down the road sideways. Hey before you deside, visit www.rodmillen.com

At the SEMA show in NJ of '99 there was a '99 GS400 doing donuts in the middle of the road. There was smoke everywhere. You could hear turbo spool & wastegates going off.

I had the same consideration between a 98 GS400 and my current CL Type S. In your case though, I would probably opt for the GS400. I don't necessarily miss 4 doors (Q45 followed by 540iA then the CL), but they are nice. Both cars are top quality. Tough choice ... can you swing 'em both

If this car is to be your daily driver, you need to think about the winter. I had a rear wheel drive car with performance tires that I couldn't drive in NJ in the winter without wetting my pants. You also have to realize that the traction control system helps only if there is any traction to be had. If the snow is deep or roads are icy the system throttles back the engine to zero and you're just stuck, especially on inclines. You'll probably be OK if you get yourself a set of winter tires to swap but you should factor that in your cost comparison. IMHO, the Lexus GS400 is a nice car but not nice enough to make it more desirable than a brand new CL-S.

I hate used cars. I've had bad experiences and vowed never to buy other people's problems. Never owned a Lexus, but if their certified used vehicle program covers any problems you may encounter than I'd go for the GS. But for me..never again used..

Why don't you go for a brand new 2002 TL Type S. It gives you the all new car feel and 4-door convenience. And this one really looks good, since you could also have the factory underbody spoilers installed.

I think that you need to consider maintenace cost in your decision. I used to own a ES 300 and a SC 400 and the maintenace on these cars that wasn't covered under warranty got pretty pricey. That is why I have a Acura now. Maintenace is reasonable.

IF I where in your situation, I'd pick the GS400 provided it checks out OK. Keep in mind, I have owned 4 Acuras out of 5 cars total, and all where Coupes. I still have two currently. But the GS400 is among my personaly favorite 4 door cars, and I'll be selling one of my Acura Coupes and getting a Lexus GS in a little while. I don't think maintenance is any differnet then Acura, as my sister owns Lexus, and the cost seems about the same that I pay for all my Acuras all these years. Heck, even my friend with his Mercedes pays no more them I do for routine maintenance on the Acura. As far as the TL-S, that is my 3rd choice in 4 door cars. I king of like the C class Mercedes a tad over the TL-S, but I trust the Acura reliability better. So still, it would be the Lexus for me.

Where the heck did you find that kind of deal? If I found a deal like that, I'd take it right away...

Take the Lexus ANYDAY over the Acura. I'm not saying Acuras are bad cars, but hey, its a lexus GS400!

Kinda like saying a new Acura or a '99 540i 6-speed.

It really matters what is more important to you. Some people NEED to have new cars. I am not one of them. 8 months ago I was in the same boat and I needed a 'new' car. I purchased a loaded '98 GS400 (17"s, spoiler, NAV, HID) with 53K and a warranty to 100K. Sure, I could have had the new acura for the price.

I have had no problems mechanically with the GS, and if I do Lexus will take care of me (better deal experience then Acura). Even though my car now as 65K miles, it drives as though it was new. I swear it does. I was very concerned about getting a car with such high mileage, but the Lex is the bomb!

The real decision maker for me was depreciation. All cars depreciate, but the first 2 years are the worst. In 2 years, take a look at how much any car you buy today for $30K will be worth. I guarantee your used car bought for the same amount will be worth more, because it already took it's hit when you bought it.

If only I could talk my wife into getting a used car, for her we will be getting a new TL-S. To me, a used $55K car is still a $55K car...

Good luck!

Thanks for the help everybody, i think i'm gonna go for the 99 GS4. I found one in blue/tan leather with 17 inch chrome and premium sound. I luv the cl-s but i found Lexus more confortable and believe it or not more fun to drive. You have to remember that i live in Brooklyn, Ny and Lexus GS400 is considered the hottest car over here.
